Abudefduf also known as the Sergeant-majors is a genus of fish in the family Pomacentridae.

The name is from Arabic abu literally meaning "father" but not in a literal sense; it means "the one with", and def meaning "side", and the intensive plural ending -duf. So, the name means "the one (fish) with prominent sides".
