Above Suspicion is a British TV series based on Lynda La Plante's novels Above Suspicion, The Red Dahlia, Deadly Intent and Silent Scream. It stars Kelly Reilly and Ciarán Hinds, and features the career of La Plante's latest heroine DC Anna Travis.

The first series, Above Suspicion, was shown on the 4th and 5th of January, 2009; the second series, Above Suspicion: The Red Dahlia, was shown on the 4th, 5th, and 6th of January, 2010. The third series, Above Suspicion: Deadly Intent, was shown on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th of January, 2011. The fourth series, Above Suspicion – Silent Scream was shown on the 9th, 16th, and 23rd of January, 2012; in a break from the previous broadcasts, which were broadcast on consecutive days, this latest tale was serialized weekly.

ITV cancelled Above Suspicion on May 28th, 2012.[1]

Series 1

Above Suspicion

This two-part series follows trainee DC Anna Travis. Anna is assigned to her first homicide case; a string of grisly murders that have gone unsolved for the past eight years. The discovery of a new victim, who doesn't fit the usual profile of prostitute or drug user, causes concern that the killer may be indiscriminately targeting his victims. Eager to prove herself, Travis uncovers a vital piece of evidence linking one man to all the killings. But things get complicated when she finds herself attracted to the prime suspect...

The first part attracted high audience figures of 6.8 million viewers.[2] The Daily Telegraph called the show "Lynda La Plante's younger, sassier successor to Prime Suspect."[3] Audience viewership figures increased to 7.3 million in the second and concluding installment.[4]

Series 2

Above Suspicion: The Red Dahlia

A young girl's body is dumped, horrifically mutilated and drained of blood. Her death is an ominous mirror image of an unsolved 1940s case in Los Angeles known as "The Black Dahlia". Detective Sergeant Anna Travis must race against time to catch this copycat killer, dubbed "The Red Dahlia" from the flower his victim wore in her hair. But there are no suspects.

This series was based on a copycat murderer re-enacting the Black Dahlia murder. Lynda La Plante adapted this from her own novel The Red Dahlia.

Reception

The first episode was watched by 6.8 million viewers (26% of all viewers), taking the 9pm slot from its main rival, the return of the BBC series Hustle.[5] The programme was reviewed favourably by The Daily Telegraph, with a request for "More please."[6]

Series 3

Above Suspicion: Deadly Intent

A man kills the surgeon who has just changed his face. The team investigates the shooting of a retired police officer known by Langton at a drug dealer's den on a seedy estate, which soon links into one of the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives, a drug dealer who disappeared over ten years ago. Kelly Reilly, Ciarán Hinds, Celyn Jones, Amanda Lawrence and Shaun Dingwall all reprise their respective roles, with Ray Fearon, Robbie Gee and Andrew Woodall also starring.

Reception

The first episode opened with 5.495 million viewers on ITV, a 19.5% share, with another 326,000 on ITV HD. It was narrowly beaten by BBC One's new series of Silent Witness which, with 5.877 million viewers, had a 20.9% share of the 9-10pm audience.[7]

Series 4

Above Suspicion: Silent Scream

DI Anna Travis and DCS James Langton are once again reunited to investigate the murder of British film star and tabloid favourite Amanda Delany, who was killed in her own home.
