Ron Humphrey (born May 27, 1977) often billed as Abongo Humphrey, is an American professional mixed martial artist who most recently competed in the Light Heavyweight division of Strikeforce. A professional competitor since 2003, Humphrey has also formerly competed on the Iron Ring television series featured on BET.
Background
Humphrey was a "military brat," born on a base in Vacaville, California. His mother was an Air Force colonel, both of his parents hold master's degrees, and his sister has a Phd in psychology. Humphrey was very talented at football, a star at the middle linebacker position for Tuskegee University, where he also studied psychology before beginning his career as a mixed martial arts fighter. He did his graduate studies at Emory University. During his football career Humphrey was introduced to the rising sport of mixed martial arts and would sometimes travel to Montgomery, Alabama to train. He earned his nickname "Abongo," while on a rites of passage trip in a small village on the border of Burkina Faso in Ghana. Abongo is the name of an African warrior spirit believed to protect the village.[1]
Mixed martial arts career
Humphrey began taking interest in martial arts from general grappling to Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai. He made his professional mixed martial arts debut in 2003 in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was featured in the main event. He won the fight via TKO. He also won his next fight by TKO, and fought again four years later, winning two consecutive fights by knockout before appearing on Iron Ring.
Humphrey was featured on the BET mixed martial arts show Iron Ring, eventually winning the Heavyweight tournament. He signed to fight with the EliteXC promotion shortly before its collapse, never officially debuting in a fight.
In April 2009, Humphrey made his debut in the Strikeforce promotion and faced fellow undefeated Heavyweight Brett Rogers. He suffered his first career loss via TKO in the second round.
Following his first defeat, Humphrey decided to move down to the Light Heavyweight weight class. He made his debut in this division by defeating George Bush III on the March 26, 2010 edition of Strikeforce Challengers: Johnson vs. Mahe by a guillotine choke submission.
Humphrey faced current UFC fighter Ovince St. Preux on January 7, 2011 at Strikeforce Challengers: Woodley vs. Saffiedine.[2] He lost the fight via unanimous decision.
Personal life
Humphrey is married and has children.[3] He runs a non-profit organization that helps people travel and study African culture.[3] He is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
