The Abode of Chaos (French: Demeure du Chaos) is a Museum of Contemporary Art located in Saint-Romain-au-Mont-d'Or, a small town in the vicinity of Lyon, France. It consists of more than 2,500 artworks,[1] from many different artists including Thierry Ehrmann.[2][3]
The artwork is based around the transformation of the 17th century house into a replica war zone, at contrast with the peaceful village in which it is located.[4] The mayor of the town described the house as ""It’s humanly intolerable, ugly, dramatic, with its images of destruction. Whatever you think, for me it’s not art, it’s a provocation.”[5]
The Abode of Chaos has been the subject of lawsuits, and in 2009 France's highest court, the Cour de Cassation, ruled that Ehrmann must revert his home to its pre-Abode of Chaos state.[6][7]
