Abdón Porte (1893 - 5 March 1918) was an Uruguayan footballer.
Playing career
Club career
Porte played for Colón from 1910. He moved to Libertad in 1911 before transferring to Nacional in the same year.[1]
Playing for Nacional Porte won four league titles. Until his death he played 207 times.[1][2]
International career
Porte was a member of the Uruguay squad that won the 1917 South American Championship but did not play a game at the tournament.[3]
Death
Porte shot himself in the centre of the Estadio Gran Parque Central during the night of 5 March 1918. His death followed period in which he was not selected for the first team. His body and a suicide note were found the next morning.[4]
The western stand at the Parque Central was named in his honour.
