Nawab Mohammed Abbas Ali Mirza Khan Bahadur (born 1942)[1] is the present Nawab of Murshidabad and has been since the Supreme Court of India declared him to be the lawful heir to the royal title in August 2014. The royal title had been in abeyance since the death of his uncle Waris Ali Mirza (the third Nawab of Murshidabad) in 1969.[2] Abbas Ali Mirza is the eldest son of Syed Md. Sadeque Ali Mirza (d.1959) (a scion of the Bengali royal house) and Sahibzadi Hashmat un-nisa Begum (d.1995),[3] a daughter of Wasif Ali Mirza, the second Nawab of Murshidabad.[4] The titular title would have been passed down to the children of his uncle Waris Ali Mirza upon his death in 1969 had they not been either disinherited by their father, predeceased him or had excluded themselves from the succession under Indian law by adopting foreign citizenship.[5]

"I have links on both sides. My mother was the daughter of the second Nawab Bahadur while my father was his nephew. I thus received the title that would have gone to my cousins had they not settled in England."
Abbas Ali Mirza Khan Bahadur, Nawab of Murshidabad[6]

The Nawab, who lives in Murshidabad, has launched a legal challenge to see his family's ancestral property returned.[7]
