Synopsis
For generations, the solar system – Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt – was humanity's great frontier. Until now. The protomolecule (an extraterrestrial infectious agent discovered on the moon Pheobe) spent a little more than a year preparing itself program under the clouds of Venus, has launched a massive complex of structures that assembled itself to a massive, thousand-kilometer-wide gate that parked 2 AU outside of Uranus's orbit, leading to a starless space beyond.
Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are part of a vast flotilla of scientific and military ships from the UN, Mars, and the Outer Planets Alliance, going out to examine the gate. Behind the scenes, a complex plot is set in to motion, with the destruction of Holden at its core. As the emissaries of the human race try to find out whether the gate is an opportunity or a threat, the greatest danger is the one they brought with them.
