Abaarso School of Science and Technology (Abaarso School) is an advanced educational institute in Abaarso, located in the northwestern Somaliland region of Somalia. Its campus lies some 18 km west of the provincial capital of Hargeisa. Abaarso School was a secondary school only until 2013, when it first began running an intermediate school as well.

Junior High/High School

Abaarso School of Science and Technology takes the best students from across the country and sometimes outside the country, providing six years of practical and culturally relevant education, taught entirely in English. It is a 6-year boarding school (grades 7-12) for boys and girls, which uses a selective admissions process and a rigorous curriculum, and holds its students to extremely high standards of academics and behavior.[1]

Students at Abaarso School endure a rigorous 34-hour-per-week schedule mainly focused on mathematics, English, and logical thinking. The curriculum is based on the American systems, but also includes Islamic Studies and Arabic classes that meet Somaliland's education standards.[2] It is tailored to bring the students up to speed with their most competitive peers around the world.

The teaching staff comprises highly educated teachers from all over the world, most native English speakers.[3][4] Students benefit from extended access to teachers, receiving extra lessons and tutoring beyond the classroom.

Students also enjoy a host of extracurricular clubs and sports facilities, that include soccer, basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts, as well as a running track.

Other programs

Additionally, Abaarso School offers a number of community services that the students perform. These are including orphanage tutoring and rural tutoring.

Orphanage tutoring

Three days a week, tutors from Abaarso School of Science and Technology go to the Hargeisa Orphanage Center and teach orphans (ranging from 5 year olds to 19 year olds) a series of math, English, and logic classes designed to augment the courses offered by the local schools.

In 2013, the Abaarso School won the opportunity to give full scholarships to four orphans from this tutoring program.[5]

Rural tutoring

As an additional community service, Abaarso School students also tutor the children at the primary school in the Abaarso village five times a week.

In 2013, the Abaarso School has also won the opportunity to give a full scholarship to a female student from this tutoring program.[6]

Campus

The campus includes an attractive new school, 16 staff boarding units, separate boys’ and girls’ dormitories, mosque, cafeteria, computer and chemistry laboratories, training center, a large library containing 30,000 books, football field, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, and multiple guard towers. It also hosts the Abaarso school training center, a brand new facility complete with 250-person conference hall, two 10—15 person meeting rooms, and restrooms.

Student life

Abaarso School students gain a huge amount of help from their teachers and fellow students. In each dormitory, there are four students living there. Moreover, there are proctors, a group of students designed to help the students with their problems by showing them a better way to deal with difficulties, and student council, which are a group of students that make the student life better. However, each student at Abaarso School has the responsibility of cleaning and maintaining his or her part of the school environment.
