Plot

Shankar is an orphan raised by a sincere police officer Raja Rao. In an unexpected situation, Raja Rao's son Bharath kills a kid and Shankar takes the blame on him and is imprisoned while Raja Rao warns him not to meet him again. Years later Shankar is a CI who is referred as 'Encounter' Shankar because of his track record as an encounter specialist. He is posted to Bukkapatnam town in Tadipatri, Ananthapuram and is assigned the task of ending the illegal businesses of a dreaded local don Damodar whose dream project is to build a power plant. Using his clever mind, Shankar destroys all the three main businesses of Damodar by trapping the respective in-charges of those businesses. He brings a stay on the power project by bringing few vital witnesses. On a parallel note, Shankar loves a sweet shop owner named Saroja who reciprocates his love at a later point of time.

A person named Shekhar approaches Shankar and through him, he informs the local SP Mallikharjun that he is the witness of the murder of environmentalist Prakash by Damodar. Later Damodar influences all the witnesses including Shekhar before Shankar could arrest him while Mallikharjun apologizes to Damodar and leaves. Later he comes to know that Raja Rao's son Bharath, the district collector committed suicide along with his wife who was a friend of Prakash because of defamation and personal attacks when Bharath tried to stop the power project in which Damodar held half of the share and Mallikharjun, Central minister Nagaraju held the remaining half share. Before dying Bharath revealed the truth behind Shankar to Raja Rao thus uniting them. Shankar swears to take revenge and by using a lawyer named Database Danayya, he gathers information regarding the power broker of this project named Delhi Suri, Mallikharjun and Damodar's conservative girlfriend named Sukanya who actually was an actress working in C-grade films in the past.

By trapping initially and blackmailing later, Shankar gets hold of Delhi Suri and with this help, he creates rift between Damodar and Nagaraju and gets the latter killed by Damodar's henchmen. Later by blackmailing Sukanya that they would reveal her past to Damodar, they trap Mallikharjun with her help and accuse him of a rape attempt on Sukanya though Mallikharjun was a gay which none believed. Mallikharjun is killed by poisoning the food he ate while Damodar's brother Durga is killed by Damodar himself after Shankar pollutes his mind saying Durga is trying to kill him for wealth. Meanwhile Shankar and Saroja get engaged. Delhi Suri comes to know about Database Danayya and destroys his office. Danayya takes revenge by revealing Delhi Suri's role in the murders of the three people. When Damodar tries to kill Delhi Suri at his guest house, he is confronted by Shankar who kills him after a long fight. Bharath receives posthumous recognition for his honesty while Delhi Suri turns a police informer working under Shankar.

Development

Srinu Vaitla announced that his next film will be with Mahesh Babu after the success of Baadshah. He had written his own script for the film assisted by Gopi Mohan.[8] This film was said to be produced on 14 Reels Entertainment which marked the second collaboration of Ram Achanta, Gopichand Achanta, Anil Sunkara - Mahesh Babu - Srinu Vaitla - S. Thaman together after Dookudu which released in 2011.[9] The film was speculated as the sequel of Dookudu which was rubbished by the production team.[10] The Muhurtham of the film was planned on 16 October 2013.[11] but it was postponed to 25 October 2013 by paying respect to actor Srihari who succumbed to liver cancer on 9 October 2013.[12][13] Film was launched at Ramanaidu Studios. Producers D. Ramanaidu, Shyam Prasad Reddy attended, clapped the board and switched the camera on for Muhurtham (Muhurat) shot.[14] K. V. Guhan, who worked with Srinu Vaitla for Dookudu and one of the cinematographers of Baadshah, was recruited as the Cinematographer of this film. M. R. Varma was recruited as the Editor of the film and A. S. Prakash was finalised as the Art Director of the film.[15]

Casting

Tamannaah was selected as lead heroine marking her first collaboration with Mahesh Babu.

Mahesh Babu was the first actor to sign this film and was signed for the role of a tough cop for the third time in his career named Encounter Specialist Shankar, similar to the one he played in Dookudu.[16] He spoke Anantapur dialect in this film quite opposite to his role in Dookudu in which he spoke in Telangana dialect.[17][18] He later said "I’m playing a completely different character in this film and it’ll be a typical mass entertainer in Sreenu Vaitla’s style." He also allotted Bulk dates for the film for a non stop shoot till the completion of the film.[19] Srinu Vaitla after writing the script he has started searching for main lead opposite Mahesh Babu. Tamannaah was confirmed as the female lead after the names of Sonam Kapoor[20] Samantha[21] Deepika Padukone[22] Shruti Haasan[23][24] circulated in the Internet. She was reported to play a full length mass role in this film.[25] She was rumored to walk out from the project because of her Hindi and Tamil commitments. It was also speculated that the production team planned to shoot with Mahesh Babu initially and shoot Tamannaah's parts later as an alternative idea.[26][27] However, her manager replied that she is starring in Aagadu and has allotted bulk dates for the film.[28] She was also rumored to essay the role of a Police officer in this film.[29] It was known later that she would play the role of a local sweet shop owner.[30][31] She also sported a traditional attire for her look in the film.[32]

Sai Kumar was said to replace Srihari in the film after his demise.[33] Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam were added to the film's cast later.[15] In November, it was reported that Rajendra Prasad was selected to play Mahesh's father in the film who confirmed his inclusion in late March 2014.[34][35] Nadhiya was reported to play the role of Mahesh's sister in this film but her inclusion remained unconfirmed.[36][37][38] Prakash Raj was rumored to play a Crucial and Distinct Dual role in this film in which one is a negative role and the other is a positive role and was said to be one of the rare films in which Prakash Raj is playing a Dual role.[39] However, Prakash Raj later clarified that he will be seen in a single negative role in the film.[40] He was replaced by Sonu Sood later because of creative differences between Prakash Raj and Srinu Vaitla.[41][42][43][44] Brahmaji was selected to play the role of an honest police constable.[45] Shruti Haasan was selected for a special appearance in an item number which marked her first item number in her career.[46] Posani Krishna Murali and Tanikella Bharani were selected for comic roles.[47][48][49] Brahmanandam performed a spoof of Racha, Legend and Race Gurram.[50] Mahesh performed a spoof on Meelo Evaru Koteeswarudu.[51]

Reception

Critical reception

The Hindu wrote "Aagadu is a simple, oft-repeated cop vs. don story. The difference here is the don is reduced to a cardboard. For a mind game to be interesting, both players need to be smart and second guess the opponent’s next move, which doesn’t happen here. If one is looking for gags, Aagadu offers them in plenty. But try an overdose of this formula and it could be tiring."[183] The Times of India wrote "Around the time the movie was announced speculation was abuzz that the film was going to be a sequel to Dookudu. It seems more like a remake with a much louder Mahesh Babu, more banal jokes, and a few superficial twists in the screenplay. In operating system parlance it's what they'd call Dookudu 2.0 version. We aren't sure if this rehashed version is an improvement over the old one though. There's fun to be had off course but perhaps the end product is more slapstick than funny" and rated the film 3/5.[184]

Deccan Chronicle wrote "Though this film has many similarities of Srinu Vaitla’s earlier films, but it’s Mahesh Babu who has the audience’s attention throughout. Watch it for him and more rely on him" and rated the film 3.5/5.[185] Sify wrote "Director Srinu Vaitla has thrown the script of this film to the winds. He relies on comedy, but at times it's too much. Overall Aagadu doesn't pass the muster. The director and the lead actor have repeated themselves. Aagadu is definitely not a heavy weight film."[186] IndiaGlitz wrote "With a vacuous storyline like this, Vaitla heavily relies on his style of comedy and Mahesh's comic timing that was on full display in his previous outing with the director. In his attempt to make the film a fun ride all throughout, Vaitla commits a Baadshah folly with royal remorselessness. It's a film where Mahesh and Vaitla repeat themselves apparently because they are still enamoured of their previous outing" and rated the film 3.25/5 calling it an "average fare".[187] The New Indian Express wrote "Inspite of an entertaining first half, Aagadu fizzles out in the second half and makes for an ordinary affair".[188]

Behindwoods wrote "High on visuals, low on content, Aagadu means, "He will not halt", but the movie does take a halt with the songs. The movie keeps going on and on with no exclusive build-up for the climax, before it get's over. Aagadu is too comically heightened and loses on the actual intent of the story" and rated the film 3/5.[189]

Public response

The Hindu said a section of audience said that its similarity to Mahesh and Srinu Vaitla’s preceding collaboration Dookudu was the reason for its failure. [190] Deccan Chronicle conducted a survey according to which a section of Hyderabad audience opined that the movie even has dialogues that have no place in it and the film is a mix of Dookudu other popular films. Similar views were expressed in Vijayawada and Vishakhapatnam.[191] Ram Gopal Varma expressed his opinion stating "Just watched Aagadu and now going to watch Dookudu,Businessman and Pokiri and I sincerely think Mahesh also should do the same. I'm told Aagadu is a 56 crore film. And in sheer comparison Magadheera looks like a 750 crore film. My comparison between Aagadu and Magadheera is mainly because they both are the most expensive films for their own individual times.[192] In the executive committee meeting of AP film chamber of commerce, exhibitors and distributors asked them to arrange a meeting with the producers of this film along with Bellamkonda Suresh and Lagadapati Sridhar because of whom they have incurred losses.[193]Mahesh Babu Remuneration was INR18 crore (US$2.9 million) and srinu vaitla remuneration was INR12.5 crore (US$2.0 million) and Tamanaah Remuneration was INR2.5 crore (US$400,000) for the film made the Budget Escalating to INR55 crore (US$8.7 million) including Marketing & Prints Costs.

Box office

Aagadu collected INR19 crore (US$3.0 million) share at the worldwide box office in the first two days.[194] The film ended the opening weekend on a good note by grossing INR276 million (US$4.4 million) share and took the second spot in the list of Telugu films with highest opening weekend worldwide share of all time surpassing the three day collections of Race Gurram, Yevadu and Rabhasa.[195] The film grossed INR312 million (US$5.0 million) share and stood in the seventh spot in the list of Telugu films with worldwide top first week shares surpassing the first week collections of Naayak, Racha and Ramayya Vasthavayya.[196] Because of mixed reviews and stiff competition from Loukyam and Govindudu Andarivadele, the film collected INR342.5 million (US$5.4 million) share as final collections.[2]

India

Aagadu opened grossing a share of INR97.4 million (US$1.5 million) at AP/Nizam box office on its first day. It also collected INR3.05 million (US$48,000) at Tamil Nadu Box office. The film's performance dropped on the second day due to rains in some areas and it was estimated that the film collected a share of INR33 million (US$520,000) at AP/Nizam box office.[197] Since the second day, the film faced a huge drop in it collections and on its fifth day, it collected a share of INR7 million (US$110,000) at AP/Nizam Box office.[198] The film earned a total of INR192.5 million (US$3.1 million) share at AP/Nizam box office in its first week.[196] The film collected INR214 million (US$3.4 million) at AP/Nizam Box office, INR37.5 million (US$600,000) at Karnataka Box office and INR16 million (US$250,000) in rest of India in its final run.[2]

Overseas

The film collected approximately INR322 million (US$5.1 million).[199] It crossed the $1 million mark in two days including Thursday premieres at the USA box office.[200][201] The film collected INR62.5 million (US$990,000) at the US box office and INR12.5 million (US$200,000) in rest of the overseas market in its full run.[2]
