A Red Orchid Theatre

A Red Orchid Theatre is an ensemble theatre located in the Old Town district of Chicago now its twenty-first year of producing having opened in 1993.[1]

Productions include a revival of Sam Shepard's Simpatico which was a prodigious critical and box office success, Eugène Ionesco's The Killer and 'Tis Pity She's a Whore by John Ford, world premieres of Tracy Letts' Bug and Craig Wright's Mistakes Were Made as well as other new and canonical plays. Company members include actors Michael Shannon (Academy Award nominee), Guy Van Swearingen, Larry Grimm, (the three founding members of the theatre company), Kirsten Fitzgerald, Danny McCarthy, Mierka Gerten, Jennifer Engstrom, Steve Haggard, Natalie West, Lance Baker, Kamal Angelo Bolden and Doug Vickers, playwright Brett Neveu, designers Karen Kawa, Mike Durst and Joe Fosco, and directors Dado Gyure, Karen Kessler and Shade Murray. Artistic associates of the company include Steve Schine, Steve Wilson and Stephanie Heller.

A Red Orchid Theatre's mission statement reads: A Red Orchid Theatre is an ensemble of artists dedicated to the proliferation of live theatre in the modern world. We believe that theatre is the greatest sustenance for the human spirit and approach our work with a palpable sense of social compassion, aesthetic rigor, and honesty. By presenting new plays from all over the world and by reviving insightful works from the past that bear new relevance today, we aim to seek out and build new audiences for the modern stage.

In the summer of 2014, A Red Orchid Theatre will take its original production of The Opponent by ensemble member Brett Neveu to New York's 59E59 Theaters with the original cast (ensemble members Guy Van Swearingen and Kamal Angelo Bolden), director (ensemble member Karen Kessler) and designers (Joey Wade, Myron Elliott, Joe Court, John Tovar and ensemble member Mike Durst).[2]
