"A Man of a Million Faces" is a song by Stephin Merritt. It was created in 2007 specifically for NPR's "Project Song" (from All Songs Considered).

Background

The song was created in two days based on one picture and one term. The picture chosen was from Phil Toledano and the term (out of six) was 1974.

Recording

All of the music was recorded individually by Stephin Merritt and then pieced together one at a time. The instruments supplied were a grand piano, an assortment of other keyboards (including a '70s MOOG synthesizer), drums and guitars and even a sampler from which Merritt derived the sound of a vintage Mellotron.
