Arachidonate 15-lipoxygenase is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the ALOX15 gene.[1] ALOX15, also termed 15-lipoxygenase-1 (15-LO-1 or 15-LOX-1), is distinguished from its related oxygenase, ALOX15B or 15-lipoxygenase-2. ALOX15 oxygenates arachidonic acid at either its 15 or 12 carbon position to form respectively 15-hydroperoxyicosatetraenoic acid and 12-hydroperoxyicosatetraenoic acid. 15-hydroperoxyicosatetraenoic (see 15-hydroxyicosatetraenoic acid) and 12-hydroperoxyicosatetraenoic (see 12-Hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid) acids have intrinsic, biologically and medically significant bioactivities but are also further metabolized to a wide range of products whose activities extend far beyond their precursors.
