AFL South Africa is the governing body and development organisation for Australian rules football in South Africa.

They manage the South African national Australian rules football team, development leagues and competitions in several provinces as well as junior participation.

The body is funded by North West Academy of Sport, Ausaid and Tattersalls and is primarily concerned with participation in Australian Football amongst indigenous South Africans.

History

Formed as Footy South Africa in 2003, the body's main aim was to developing the sport of Australian rules football in South Africa. Brian Dixon was appointed inaugural president.

The body was one of the first international governing bodies to affiliate with the Australian Football League, renamed as "AFL South Africa" in 2006.

Leagues and competitions

National team

AFL South Africa are responsible for managing the South African national Australian rules football team.

National Championships

The first national championships were co-ordinated by AFL South Africa in 2008.

FootyWild

FootyWild was launched in 2007 to be the South African equivalent of Auskick to introduce young South Africans to the sport.

Coming out of the 2009 Nationals, was the selection of two footyWILD futures squads.

The Inland senior and youth squads comprising players from Gauteng and North-West Province; meanwhile the Coastal senior and youth squads are made up of players from Kwa-Zulu Natal and Western Cape Provinces.

Players selected come from a range of backgrounds including existing National representatives, established Provincial players and young athletes identified through the ROAR Talent program.

The first camps will take place in November with both squads set to play the Flying Boomerangs Indigenous Youth team when they tour early next year.

A major camp involving both squads in March 2010 will provide a selection opportunity to the SA Lions before the fourth AIS / AFL Academy tour of South Africa arrives in April. The Lions will play the AIS at Sahara Park, Newlands on Sunday 11 April before the camp program continues for the rest of South Africa’s domestic season.
