9News (formerly known as Solar News and Current Affairs or Solar News) is the news and public affairs programming division of the media conglomerate Nine Media Corporation (formerly Solar Television Network, Inc.) leasing the airtime of Radio Philippines Network. 9News produces its local news and information contents for 9TV (formerly Solar News Channel and rebranded as CNN Philippines last March 16, 2015), and media portal CNN Philippines website and Solar Sports Desk website. The news division, however does not explicitly identify themselves anymore as 9News with the rebrand to CNN Philippines.

After Solar Entertainment Corporation acquired 34 percent of Radio Philippines Network from the Philippine government as part of RPN/IBC privatization in 2011, Solar TV finally ventured into news at the end of 2011.[1]

First aired in January 16, 2012 as one of the TV networks that aired the Corona Impeachment Trial special coverage. It currently airs their programs in Talk TV since January 2012 and on Solar News Channel on October 30, 2012.

Most of its news personalities are from ABS-CBN and ABS-CBN News Channel and also from RPN which was partially purchased by Solar Entertainment. In July 16, 2012, Solar News launches its first local newscast Solar Network News (known as Network News, then now known as CNN Philippines Network News) followed by Solar Nightly News (known as Nightly News, then now known as CNN Philippines Nightly News), An hourly news update called Solar News Update (later on called Solar Headlines, on August 25, 2014, it was now known as Headlines) and on March 16, 2015, it was now known as CNN Philippines Updates Solar Newsday (now known as Newsday and today, now known as CNN Philippines News Room) and Solar Daybreak (now known as Daybreak). A sports news called Solar Sports Desk (now known as Sports Desk). Solar News and Current affairs evening block first aired in November 2012 composing of 5 programs on legal advices, health, politics and media. In January 2013, Solar News Cebuano (now known as Cebuano News) starts as its make history as the first Cebuano TV newscast that aired on an English language news channel. In June 2014, Serbisyo All Access became their first program in Filipino. In August 2014, Kapampangan News caters viewers of Central Luzon.

In November 2013, San Miguel Corporation President and COO Ramon S. Ang personally acquire a majority stake in Solar Television Network as well as its stake on RPN.[2] Meanwhile, on August 20, 2014, Solar Entertainment Corporation chief Wilson Tieng announced that he ceded his entire share on Solar TV Network, Inc., including its 34% majority share on RPN, to Antonio Cabangon-Chua, owner of business newspaper BusinessMirror and ABC.[3][4] To reflect the change of ownership, and upon announcement of the rebranding of Solar News Channel into 9TV Network by August 23, Solar News will also rebrand into 9News, retaining its news and current affairs programming as 9TV expands its weekend programming.[5][6][7]

9News will undergo major overhaul as parent Nine Media Corporation signed a 5-year brand licensing agreement with Turner Broadcasting System to share resources with CNN to integrate the latter's content and 9News's reporting as CNN Philippines will set to launch on March 16, 2015.
