The 2nd Foreign Cavalry Regiment (French: 2e Régiment Étranger de Cavalerie, 2e REC) was a cavalry regiment of the French Foreign Legion which existed from 1939 to 1940 and again from 1945 to 1962.
History
The regiment was originally established on 1 July 1939[1] from elements of the 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment stationed in Morocco. It remained in Morocco until disbanded in 1940.[2]
The regiment was raised a second time in 1945, again from elements of the 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment. It was sent to Indochina and fought there. In 1949 the regiment moved to Madagascar. In 1956, it was stationed in Morocco. The 2nd Squadron (2e Esc) was attached to 1er REP when it was deployed to take part in the operations of the Suez Canal Crisis.[3] The same year, the regimental home was moved to Algeria. In July 1962, at the end of the Algerian War, the regiment was again disbanded.[4]
