225 West 57th Street (also known as the Nordstrom Tower) is a supertall residential project being developed by the Extell Development Company in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The building will rise 1,479 ft (451 m) to its roof, and 1,775 ft (541 m) to the tip.[1] The height of the spire is 1 foot (0.3 m) less than that of the United States' tallest building, the 1,776-foot (541.3 m) One World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan; upon completion, 225 West 57th Street will become not only the second tallest building in the city, but also in the country. The building will also be the tallest by roof height in the United States, surpassing the Willis Tower, and the tallest residential building in the world both by roof height and architectural height, and will surpass 432 Park Avenue for world's tallest residential building.[2]
Design
The first seven floors of the tower will be anchored by a Nordstrom department store which will be New York City's first.[3] Floors eight to twelve will house a hotel.[4] Due to another residential project, 220 Central Park South, being built across the street from 225 West 57th Street, Extell purchased air-rights to build a cantilever over the Art Students League of New York's building, to which the League's members voted in favor.[5] Official renderings were revealed on New York YIMBY on April 20, 2015.[6]
