The 2016 National Football League begins in January 2016. 31 Gaelic Football county teams from Ireland (Kilkenny have not played in the competition since 2012) plus London participate.

Format

Teams

The 2016 format of the National Football League is a system of four divisions of eight teams. Each team plays each other team in its division once.

League Rankings and Tie-Breaker

2 points are awarded for a win, and 1 for a draw. If two teams are level on points - a) if a team won their head-to-head match they are ranked ahead b) if the head-to-head match was a draw, team positions are determined by points difference. If three or more teams are level on points, team rankings are determined solely by points difference.

Finals, Promotions and Relegations

The top four teams in Division 1 contest the 2016 NFL semi-finals and final. The top two teams in divisions 2, 3 and 4 are promoted, and contest the finals of their respective divisions. The bottom two teams in divisions 1, 2 and 3 are relegated.
