The 2015 season of the Indian Premier League (abbreviated as IPL 8 or Pepsi IPL 2015) is the eighth season of the IPL. Kolkata Knight Riders are the defending champions having won the title in the 2014 season. The complete tournament is expected to be held across different cities in India unlike the previous season. The tournament started on 8 April 2015[1] after the end of the 2015 Cricket World Cup. A total of 60 Twenty20 matches will be held in the entire tournament. No matches will be held in Kolkata between April 12 and April 25 due to Municipal Elections.[2]

Players auction

Franchises retained 123 players 8th IPL season before moving into auction. The released players provided an option to register themselves for auction. 6 Players were transferred across teams before the auction took place. In the Pepsi IPL 2015 auction held on February 16 at Bangalore, Yuvraj Singh was sold to Delhi Daredevils for 16 crores INR, for a record bid in IPL auction history. A total of 67 players were sold out in the auction and all franchises spent total of 87.60 Crores to buy players.[3]

Officials

The Pepsi IPL 2015 season will see 26 match officials, 13 Indian umpires and four match referees who will be officiating. Twenty six match officials (Umpires and Referees) participated in a two-day workshop, organised by the BCCI, in preparation for the upcoming Pepsi IPL season. The workshop was held at the Cricket Centre, Mumbai, on 4 and 5 April 2015, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.[4]

Venues

12 venues were selected to host the matches.[5] Mumbai, Pune and Ranchi will host Qualifier 1, Eliminator and Qualifiers 2 respectively and Kolkata will host the Final.[6]

IPL Fanpark Initiative

BCCI started a new initiative "IPL Fanpark" to spread the reach of IPL across the country. As a part of the initiative, IPL will be made available in the stadiums of 15 cities, apart from the current 12 venues hosting the matches, on a large screen. The access to these stadiums will be free and would be based on first come first serve basis. [10]
