Qualifying
Kurt Busch won the pole with a time of 27.857 and a speed of 193.847 mph (311.967 km/h).[15] “The guys at the track, the guys at the shop, the tire guy, the engine guy, everyone chipped in,” Busch said after winning the pole. “That’s what this is all about - getting that little extra. We did that with our Haas Automation Chevrolet today. Thanks to Gene (Haas). The second pole of the year feels good. Now we need to dial it in and get that long-run speed out of the car.”[15] “We stuck to our plan, and that’s what exactly what we had planned to do in practice,” said Kevin Harvick. “Everything worked out good. We made one qualifying run and spent the second half of practice really concentrating on race runs and make sure we can run the long hauls. I feel really good about that. I’m just really proud of everyone at Stewart-Haas Racing, on the 41 team for getting a pole and my team for doing a solid job every week.”[15] “You can always be a little bit better, but the 4 and the 41 have been fast week in and week out and they’re fast here again,” Brad Keselowski said. “The guys did a great job getting us to where we’re at here and being first in class. It never helps to have extra runs on the tires, but we made the most of it.”[15] “I felt like we were better in race trim than we were in qualifying trim the whole time, so we kind of finished as expected for qualifying,” Joey Logano said. “It feels really close, but I think we’re alright and we have a decent starting spot. (Crew chief) Todd (Gordon) told me we won from 10th last year, and we’ve qualified 10th the last few times we’ve been here, so we’re improving.”[15] “Well we just didn’t have the speed in our package,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said. “We like our car a lot in race trim. We should be fine there. I surely would like to have qualified better the car wasn’t very good in practice and qualifying trim. We just didn’t have the speed those other guys had. We will have to go home and work on it. We have confidence we can do it because we have done it already this year at a couple of racetracks we have had good speed. We will just have to go work on it.”[15] Jeb Burton and Brendan Gaughan were the two drivers that failed to qualify.[15]

Race
First-half
Start
The race was scheduled to start at 7:46 p.m., but started at 7:48 when Kurt Busch led the field to the green flag. He wouldn't maintain the lead, however, as his teammate Kevin Harvick passed him exiting turn 4. Engine issues were prevalent in the opening stage of the race. J. J. Yeley took his car to the garage on lap 13 because of engine issues.[16] Ryan Blaney also reported that his engine was sputtering. The first caution of the race flew on lap 32 when Alex Kennedy spun out in turn 4. He got loose in turn 3 and spun out in 4. Kurt Busch exited pit road ahead of Harvick to take the lead. Justin Allgaier was forced to restart from the tail end for a commitment line violation. Dale Earnhardt Jr. made a second stop under the caution to add lug nuts to the left-rear of his car. He had only two instead of the normal five.
The race restarted on lap 37. Brad Keselowski, running fourth at the time, made an unscheduled stop on lap 67. He exited pit road in 30th. Ryan Blaney retired from the race on lap 71.[16] Kyle Larson kicked off a wave of green flag pit stops on lap 79. Kurt Busch surrendered the lead on lap 81 to make his stop and Jeff Gordon assumed the lead. He pitted on lap 82 and the lead cycled to Brad Keselowski. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was forced to serve a drive-through penalty for speeding on pit road. Jimmie Johnson took the lead on the backstretch as debris in turn 3 brought out the second caution of the race. Johnson and Harvick swapped the lead on pit road with the former exiting with it. Denny Hamlin was forced to drop to the tail end of the field for driving through too many pit boxes exiting pit road.
Green flag run
The race restarted on lap 114. Kevin Harvick took back the lead on lap 126. Jimmie Johnson took back the lead on lap 157 as cars began hitting pit road. He surrendered the lead back to Harvick on lap 158. Harvick gave up the lead to pit on lap 159 and Kasey Kahne assumed the position. He was able to lead a lap just as teammate Jimmie Johnson was cycled back to the head of the field on lap 161. Landon Cassill made an unscheduled stop on lap 167 for a flat tire. He about hit the wall in turn 4 right in front of a number of cars.
Second-half
Halfway
Debris in turn 3 brought out the third caution of the race on lap 169. Johnson and Harvick swapped the lead on pit road being pitted on opposite ends, but it was Johnson that exited with the lead.
The race restarted on lap 177. Kasey Kahne, running eighth, made an unscheduled stop for a loose wheel on lap 198. He rejoined the race in the 22nd position. Jimmie Johnson gave up the lead on lap 222 to make his stop. Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was pitting as well, took the lead from his teammate. This cycled Kasey Kahne to the lead. Johnson passed him with ease on new tires on lap 225. The fourth caution of the race flew on lap 227 when Matt Kenseth just about spun out in turn 4. Johnson and Harvick swapped the lead on pit road with the former exited with the lead.
Bad night for HScott Motorsports
The race restarted with 100 laps to go. The fifth caution of the race flew with 86 laps to go when Michael Annett slammed the wall in turn 2. Johnson and Harvick swapped the lead on pit road with the former exiting with it. Trevor Bayne was forced to restart at the tail end for driving through too many pit boxes exiting pit road.
The race restarted with 79 laps to go. The sixth caution of the race flew with 75 laps to go when Justin Allgaier slammed the wall in turn 2. After extensive cleaning up of oil on pit road, a number of drivers stayed out led by Joey Logano while Jimmie Johnson pitted. Brad Keselowski was forced to drop to the tail end of the field for a commitment violation. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was forced to drop to the tail end of the field for his crew being over the wall too soon.
Final hundred miles
The race restarted with 65 laps to go. Kevin Harvick retook the lead with 49 laps to go. Debris in turn 3 brought out the seventh caution of the race with 41 laps to go.
The race restarted with 35 laps to go. Debris brought out the eighth caution of the race with 25 laps to go. Jamie McMurray exited pit road with the lead by taking just two tires. Kyle Larson and Casey Mears were forced to drop to the tail end of the field for driving through too many pit boxes.
Finish
The race restarted with 21 laps to go. Joey Logano was bumped out of the way by Kevin Harvick in turn 1 and managed to avoid hitting the wall.[17] He fell back to eighth in the running order. "That's the chance you take when you block," Harvick said. "You just have to kind of knock them out of the way."[17] "It's hard racing," Logano said. "It's understandable. We're racing to the end of the race. I expect to get raced the way I race people, and I would do the same thing. It's not a surprise there. I felt like I had to guard that position, and if he got by me there, I wouldn't have the opportunity to get back by him and I would have lost the race that way. We're all just racing for wins."[17] Jimmie Johnson took the lead from McMurray with 14 laps to go. Harvick was closing the gap to Johnson with three laps to go, but got too close to the wall and rode it through turn 2. Jimmie Johnson was able to pull away and score the victory.[18]
Post-race
“A great, great racecar,” Johnson said in Victory Lane. “We kept plugging away at it all race. The off week was good for us, gave us a chance to reboot, relax and get back in the swing of things.”[18] “I'm not disappointed at all,” Harvick said. “Racing for wins is what we're here to do, and just really proud of everybody, and when you can get out there and race like that and come home with stripes down the side of it, everybody is out there hopefully enjoying the show with everybody racing as hard as they did tonight.”[18] Jeff Gordon, who gambled on the final pit stop by changing just two tires, restarted second and scored a seventh-place finish - his best of the season.[19] “We struggled,” Gordon admitted. “Early on we weren’t great. We made some adjustments. We got some decent track position; I thought we were going to be pretty good. Junior got to the outside of me on a restart. Our car just wasn’t very good right there. I really struggled and we fell back and never regained it. Yeah that was a great gamble, great call by Alan and we saw early some guys take two tires and made it work for a short period of time. I don’t know we just struggled tonight. I’m not really sure where we are missing it. I just had my hands full. We were not able to get the balance just right. Obviously our teammates have it worked out because all of them were fast and obviously we have got some work to do and I have got to figure this package out. But we didn’t give up. I’m proud of that. We made it good at one point and then we got off and then we had to kind of start over and got it pretty good there at the end.”[19] Martin Truex Jr., who had only five top ten finishes the entire previous season, scored his seventh top ten finish with a ninth.[20] “It was a hard-fought night, for sure,” Truex Jr. said. “We fought the car. We fought track position a lot and had a little trouble on pit road a few times. That hurt us a bit. At the end we had to start doing some strategy stuff to get our track position back and probably gave up a few spots doing it. It was still a top 10, so all in all, it was a good night for us. We’re just missing a little bit of something. The guys are working real hard. We just need to find a little bit of speed to run with those guys.”[20]
