Events

January 2 - Central African Republic conflict (2012–present)
- Rebels halt their advance towards the capital Bangui and agree to peace talks.
- President François Bozizé fires both his army chief of staff and his son, Jean Francis Bozizé, as defense minister, taking the ministerial position for himself.
January 6 - South Africa announces it will send 400 more soldiers to the Central African Republic in an effort to assist the current regime, which faces a potential attack by the Seleka rebel coalition on the capital.
January 11 - The Central African Republic government signs a ceasefire agreement with rebels, ending a month of conflict and establishing a new coalition government.
