• January 9 – Original Three Days Grace lead singer Adam Gontier leaves the band, citing health concerns^[1]
• January 10 – Justin Timberlake announces his return to music with a new album titled The 20/20 Experience, and a summer tour with Jay-Z

February

• February 3 – Beyoncé performed during the Super Bowl XLVII halftime show and Alicia Keys sang the National Anthem
• February 4 – Fall Out Boy announce their reformation with a new album, Save Rock and Roll, and a concert tour^[2]
• February 17 – American country singer Mindy McCready commits suicide at the age of 37^[3]
• February 27 – Stone Temple Pilots fire their lead singer, Scott Weiland^[4]

• March 4 – Blink-182's 20th Anniversary Tour finished in Claremont, Western Australia, with majority of their shows being sold out
• March 15 – Justin Timberlake's album, The 20/20 Experience, was released selling 968,000 copies in its first week (and was the best-selling album of the year in the U.S.)
• March 22 – My Chemical Romance announce a breakup after 12 years together^[5]

• April 2 – Bon Jovi member Richie Sambora announced his departure from the band just hours before a concert date scheduled in Calgary, Alberta
• April 14 – Founding Deftones bassist Chi Cheng passes away at age 42 after spending more than 4 years in a coma as a result of a 2008 car accident^[6]
• April 18 – Original drummer and co-founding member of Sum 41, Steve Jocz, announces his departure from the band
• April 21 – Divinyls singer Chrissy Amphlett dies from breast cancer at the age of 53
• April 30 - Kevin Richardson comes back to the Backstreet Boys permanently.

• May 2 –Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman dies from cirrhosis of the liver at age 49
• May 16 – Candice Glover is crowned winner of American Idol (season 12) while Kree Harrison is named runner-up
• May 18 – Chester Bennington of Linkin Park fame plays his first show as the singer for Stone Temple Pilots; also STP's first concert since original singer Scott Weiland was terminated^[7]
• May 20 – The Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek dies in Germany from bile duct cancer at age 74

June

• June 18 - Kanye West releases his sixth studio album Yeezus which debuts at number one on the Billboard charts and other 30 countries such as the UK, Australia, Canada and many others; to rave reviews from major media outlets, and mixed reactions from the public.

July

• July 4 – Jay-Z releases his 12th studio album Magna Carta Holy Grail which debuts at number one on Billboard charts, and sells over 550,000 copies in its first week, giving Jay-Z his 13th number one album
• July 30 – The Backstreet Boys' eighth studio album, In a World Like This, was released about four and a half years after the release of This Is Us

August

• August 25
  • The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards were held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York
  • Justin Timberlake was awarded the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, also performing a 15-minutes medley incluiding a reunion with 'N Sync, the first time in 9 years
  • Katy Perry released her lead single Roar for her third studio album, Prism. The song reached number 1 and sold 9.9 Million around the world.

• October 27 – Lou Reed, founding member of Velvet Underground, dies in Southampton, New York from liver disease at age 71
• October 29 – The teen pop rock band Jonas Brothers announced an indefinite hiatus
• October 22 - Katy Perry's album, Prism, was released.

November

• November 5 – Eminem's album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, was released selling 792,000 copies in its first week, and was the second-best-selling album of the year in the U.S.
• November 6 – Lady Gaga's album, Artpop, was released, selling 258,000 copies in its first week, making it one of the year's most successful albums by a female artist
• November 24 – The American Music Awards of 2013 was held.
