2013 Cameron Highlands mud floods
The 2013 Cameron Highlands mud floods took placed on 23 October 2013. Three people died while another were missing in a mud flood in Bertam Valley, Cameron Highlands, Pahang, Malaysia.[1]
Causes of mud floods
The incident happened at 1:00am when water from the Sultan Abu Bakar Dam in Ringlet was released after it breached the danger level.[1] The dam water had to be released to prevent the dam from bursting following continuous rain since 7:00pm yesterday.[2] The dam water was first released at midnight followed by another at 1:00am and the third time at 2.45am, causing the water in the nearby Bertam River to suddenly rise and breach its banks.[3] As a result of that, the water overflowed into at least 80 houses, some 3 km away from the dam. Some 10 kongsi houses located along the banks of Bertam River were totally destroyed.[3]
