The 2013–14 Providence Bruins season is the franchise's 22nd season in the American Hockey League, which began on October 4, 2013.

Off-season

General manager Peter Chiarelli, who was signed to a four-year contract extension during the off season,[1] said he intended to add more young players to the Providence roster for the 2013–14 season.[2] Keith Gretzky, the younger brother of Wayne Gretzky, was promoted to amateur scouting director of the Boston Bruins organization,[3] replacing the recently dismissed Wayne Smith.[4]

The Bruins lost several players who contributed to their past year's Eastern Conference-winning season, including top two defensemen Matt Bartkowski and Torey Krug;[5][6] veteran forward Christian Hanson; team captain Trent Whitfield; and alternate captains Chris Bourque and Jamie Tardif, the latter of whom had been the team's top goal-scorer.[5][7] Other departures included defensemen Ryan Button,[8] and Colby Cohen;[9] forwards Jordan Caron,[10] Kyle MacKinnon,[11] and Graham Mink;[7] and goaltender Michael Hutchinson.[12] Newcomers to the team included forwards Anthony Camara, Seth Griffith,[13] Matt Fraser,[14] and Nick Johnson;[15] defensemen Mike Moore,[16] Joe Morrow and Ben Youds;[17] and 19-year-old goaltender Malcolm Subban, Boston's first round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.[18] Goalie Niklas Svedberg was also sent to Providence; Chad Johnson was chosen as Boston's back-up goalie over Svedberg largely because he had a smaller salary cap hit at $600,000, compared to Svedberg's $1 million.[19]

By the end of the off-season, the Bruins roster included several young skaters, including seven first-year professional players and five second-year pros.[7] After a training camp that started September 21 at the Rhode Island Sports Center in North Smithfield, Rhode Island,[17] Providence played the Worcester Sharks in two back-to-back preseason games on September 27 and 28, losing the first game 2–1, and winning second 3–1. Subban stopped 54 of 57 shots in the two games, and the team went 1-for-9 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Knight scored the lone Bruins goal from the first game, and after Worcester opened scoring in the second game, Providence responded with three unanswered goals by Wayne Simpson, Trotman and Moore.[20][21] Bobby Robins suffered a knee injury that prevented him with starting with the team as the regular season began.[7]

Regular season

October

The Bruins started the season with two away games against the St. John's IceCaps, winning the October 4 season opener 4–3 in which Svedberg made 40 saves. After St. John's tied the game by scoring twice in the final two minutes of regulation, Nick Johnson scored the breakaway game-winner 2:04 into overtime.[22] Defenseman Kevan Miller was forced to leave the game in the third period due to a shot in the head from Patrice Cormier.[23] Providence lost the next day's game 5–1, in which the IceCaps' Eric O'Dell scored a hat-trick against them, and Subban stopped 36 of 40 shots in his Providence debut.[24] The Bruins lost their October 11 home opener against the Manchester Monarchs, falling 3–2 in a shootout after surrendering a two-goal lead. Team captain Ryan Spooner scored Providence's only shootout goal.[25] Providence defeated the Portland Pirates 5–2 the next day, scoring four goals in just over 10 minutes in the second period. Spooner scored twice and recorded one assist.[26]

The Bruins lost their next two games on October 18 and 19.[27][28] Providence scored three times in the third period against the Monarchs in the latter game to force overtime, but lost after failing to score in the shootout.[28] Winger Alexander Fallstrom suffered an upper body injury in practice that kept him out for the next two games.[29] The Bruins won both of their games on October 25 and 27,[30][31] including a 4–3 shutout victory over the Springfield Falcons that ended their undefeated streak. Spooner and David Warsofsky each scored on the shootout, while Svedberg stopped five of six Springfield shots.[30] Bobby Robins, who had just returned from a seven-game absence due to an injured knee, knocked out Jean-François Jacques in a fight and was suspended for one game as a result.[29][30] By the end of October, the Providence Bruins had the worst penalty kill in the league, allowing eight goals on 25 power plays.[29] Spooner was called up to the Boston Bruins on October 31, and Moore was made team captain in his place.[32]

November

The Bruins started November with two losses to Manchester on November 1 and 2, extending the Monarchs' season undefeated streak against Providence to four games.[33]
