2012 HHSAA State Football Championships

The 2012 HHSAA State Football Championships was a series of two high school football games played on 23 November 2012 at Aloha Stadium, Honolulu, Hawaii to determine the 2012 football champion of the HHSAA Division I and Division II. The games feature the finalists of the 2012 HHSAA Division I and Division II tournaments.

The Division I game was between the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) Division I champion Punahou Buffnblue and the Oahu Interscholastic Association (OIA) Red champion Kahuku Red Raiders. The Red Raiders defeated the Buffnblue, 42-20.

With the win, the Red Raiders have won 7 of their last 9 HHSAA State Championship appearances in addition to finishing the 2012 season with a perfect 12-0 record. The Punahou Buffnblu entered the game as the 8-2 ILH D1 champions seeking their second HHSAA State Championship. The teams played against each other at Kahuku's Carleton Weimer Field in Week 2 where Punahou fell 21-13. This game was also a rematch of the 2011 HHSAA State Championship, in which Kahuku defeated Punahou 30-24.

Punahou, with a conference best 6-1, received the #2 seed. Both teams received first round byes into the semi-final round. Punahou defeated OIA Red runner-up and #3 seed Mililani 49-19.

Teams

Kahuku High School Red Raiders

The Kahuku Red Raiders ended the regular season with a perfect record for the second time in 3 years (wins in the 2010 season and post-season were vacated following an investigation into an ineligible player). Kahuku entered week 8 against long time rival Farrington High School with both teams tied for the OIA-Red East division lead with 5-0 records. Farrington had beaten Kahuku in 2011 to ruin Kahuku's perfect record on the season, but in Kahuku routed the Governors this year 31-6. The Red Raiders clinched the division and a #1 seed play-off berth with a 31-15 win over Moanalua the next week.

Kahuku's Smashmouth offense was led by senior and 3-year varsity starting runningback Aofaga Wily. Wily amassed 3,717 yards over his career and 41 touchdowns to become the state's 4th all-time rushing leader. In 2012, Wily ran for 1,542 yards prior to the championship game. Kahuku's defense was led by senior safety and wide receiver Kawehena Johnson. Except for a 31-15 win over Moanalua, Kahuku's margin of victory was 25 or more points during the regular season (including a 56-7 win over Kailua). Kahuku defeated OIA-Red West champion Mililani Trojans in the OIA Red Championship to earn the #1 seed and first round bye in the HHSAA Division I play-offs. Kahuku won a rematch with the Farrington Governors 47-14 in the semi-final round.

Punahou School Buffnblu

The Punahou Buffnblu finished the season 7-2 and ranked #1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I, clinching the #2 berth into the HHSAA Division I play-offs.

Junior quarterback Larry Tuileta was at the helm of Punahou's flex option offense. Starting every game except the regular season finale loss to Kamehameha, Tuileta completed 65% of his passes for 2,417 yards and 28 touchdown passes with only 1 interception and a rating of 140.9. His main weapon in the passing game was sophomore wide receiver Kanawai Noa who led the state with 53 receptions for 1289 yards. Punahou also had a solid ground game in senior runningback Ryan Tuiasoa, who rushed for 818 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Punahou received a first round bye and the #2 seed into the HHSAA Division I play-offs. The Buffnblu defeated OIA Red Runner-up Mililani 49-19 in the semi-final round to advance to the title game.

The Division II game was between the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) Division II champion Iolani Raiders and the Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) Division II champion Lahainaluna Lunas. This was only the third time a non-Oahu school was represented in the Division II championship game. Iolani defeated Lahainaluna, 36-33.

With the win, the Raiders have won 7 of their last 8 HHSAA State Championship appearances as well as holding the national record for most consecutive state titles at 6. Lahainaluna entered the game as the 8-1 MIL D2 champions seeking their first HHSAA State Championship. This game was also a rematch of the 2007 HHSAA State Championship, in which Iolani defeated Lahainaluna 28-21.

Teams

Iolani School Raiders

The Iolani Raiders ended the regular season with an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II best 7-3, with the only losses against the ILH Division I schools. Iolani received the #1 seed heading into the HHSAA Division II play-offs.

Senior quarterback Reece Foy returned to lead Iolani's run and shoot offense. Foy passed for 2,311 yards and 30 passing touchdowns with 5 interceptions. Foy rushed for 226 yards. Wide receivers Tanner Nishioka (866 yards and 14 touchdowns) and Chad Hanaoka (724 yards and 10 touchdowns) shared much of the passing game load along Chase Kanekuni, Yuuyo Kato, and Austin Ohira whom together amassed 81 receptions, 988 yards, and 11 touchdowns. Iolani's ground game was led by running back/wide receiver Yuuyo Kato who rushed for 832 yards and 11 touchdowns on 143 carries. Iolani received the #1 seed and first round bye into the HHSAA Division II play-off. In the semi-final round, Iolani blanked the OIA White champions Radford Rams 43-0 to secure its place in the championship game.

With a season finale victory over Pac-5, the Iolani Raiders secured their 8th consecutive Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II title under Wendell Look becoming only the second coach in state history to win conference titles 8 times in a row after St. Louis' Cal Lee, who won 16 consecutive ILH Division I titles between 1986 and 2001. This was also the 8th HHSAA Division II championship appearance (6th consecutive) by the Raiders under head coach Wendell Look, giving him and Iolani the record of most state championship appearances by a team under the same coach.

Lahainaluna High School Lunas

Lahainaluna came off an almost flawless 8-1 season, with the only loss against the Maui Interscholastic League Division I champions and rivals Baldwin Bears 20-17 in overtime.

Lahainaluna, coached by the only head coaching duo in the state, was led by dual threat quarterback Taylor Kohler-Fonohema, who passed for 539 yards and rushed for another 445 for 17 touchdowns (both passing and rushing), in their modified Wing T offense.. 3 other running backs joined Kohler-Fonohema on the ground; Semisi Filikitonga, Jared Rocha-Isalas, and Tytus Lucas together managed 1345 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Lunas ended their regular season with a 31-0 shutout against Maui at War Memorial Stadium. This was Lahainaluna's 6th shutout in the 2012 season (the Lunas posted 5 straight shutouts between August 15 and September 28 including against Maui rival Baldwin, whom Lahainaluna lost to later in the season). For their performance in the regular season, Lahainaluna was awarded the #2 seed in the HHSAA Division II play-offs, ahead of Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division II champion Konawaena and OIA White champion Radford. Lahainaluna defeated OIA White runner-up Nanakuli 28-0 to advance to the title game.

This was the second time Lahainaluna had advanced to the HHSAA Division II title game under co-head coach Garrett Tihada.
