Rankings from AP Poll

The 2012-13 Michigan State Spartans will attempt to defend their 2012 Big Ten championship. They are coming off of a season in which they exceeded expectations to win the Big Ten regular season championship, the Big Ten Tournament, and earn a 1 seed before suffering an upset by 4th seed Louisville in the Sweet 16 after starting the season unranked. Head coach Tom Izzo and the Spartans will attempt to reach their 16th straight NCAA tournament appearance, third-longest in the nation.

Preseason

2012 class

Michigan State replaced departing seniors Draymond Green, Austin Thornton, and Brandon Wood with its top-10 ranked recruiting class, headlined by 6'4 SG Gary Harris. The rest of the class consists of PF Matt Costello, PF Kenny Kaminski, and PG Denzel Valentine. Notably, Matt Costello and Denzel Valentine finished 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the voting for Michigan's Mr. Basketball, MSU's 4th straight Mr. Basketball signee (2011 winner Dwaun Anderson originally signed with Michigan State, but was released from his National Letter of Intent to go to Wagner College for personal reasons).
