The 2012–13 Hertha BSC season was the 120th season in club history. Hertha BSC lost to Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Promotion/Relegation Playoff. The sports court and the Federal Court of the German Football Association confirmed the club's relegation after the club appealed the result of the 2nd leg and lost both appeals. Levan Kobiashvili suspended for the rest of 2012 calendar year while Thomas Kraft was suspended for 5 matches. The suspensions were for their role in the altercation of Referee from the Promotion/Relegation playoff against Fortuna Düsseldorf. Christian Lell and Andre Mijatović were also suspended for their participation in altercation. But both were eventually released from the club.
Review and events
Hertha BSC were relegated after losing to Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Promotion/Relegation Playoff. The sports court and the Federal Court of the German Football Association confirmed the club's relegation after the club appealed the result of the 2nd leg and lost both appeals.[1][2] The German Football Association handed down suspensions for some of Hertha BSC's players[3] Levan Kobiashvili was banned for a year, Christian Lell was banned for 6 matches, Thomas Kraft was banned for 5 matches and Andre Mijatović was banned for 4 matches.[3] Kobiashvili's suspension was reduced to seven and a half months and Lell's ban was reduced to 5 matches.[4][5] The suspensions were for an altercation with the referee during the Promotion/Relegation playoff with Fortuna Düsseldorf.[3] Lell and Mijatović were eventually released by the club.[6] The club was disciplined for their role in the events of the 2nd leg Promotion/Relegation Playoff match against Fortuna Düsseldorf.[7] The club originally was given a €50.000 fine and limited to 20.000 tickets sold for their league match against Paderborn 07.[7] But the fine was reduced €40.000 and the limitations on ticket sales increased to a maximum of 27.500 tickets.[7] No tickets are allowed to be sold on the matchday.[7] The club must spend an extra €40.000 on a non-profit program as part of the discipline.[7]
Christian Lell, Andre Mijatović, Andreas Ottl and Patrick Ebert were all released from the club.[6]
The club also took part in the 2012–13 edition of the DFB-Pokal, the German Cup, where it was knocked out in the first round by Regionalliga Südwest side Wormatia Worms.[8]
After their 1–0 win against SV Sandhausen on 21 April 2013, they ensure their direct promotion to the 2013–14 Fußball-Bundesliga season.[9][10]
They secured the 2012–13 2. Fußball-Bundesliga title after winning against 1. FC Köln by 2–1 on 12 May 2013, the title is their third 2. Fußball-Bundesliga title.[11]
