The 2009–10 season was the 88th season in York City F.C.'s history, their sixth in the Football Conference and 82nd in the league system of English football. Their 17th-place finish in the 2008–09 season meant it was their sixth successive season in the Conference Premier. It was also Martin Foyle's first start to a season as manager, after he was appointed following the sacking of Colin Walker in November 2008. It covers a period from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010.

Most of Foyle's pre-season signings came towards the end of the previous campaign, with the signings of Michael Gash for £55,000 and Djoumin Sangaré on a free transfer being the only arrivals during the 2009–10 pre-season transfer window. The league season saw a new record for consecutive wins set, with eight victories from 14 November 2009 to 23 January 2010, as the team finished fifth in the league and so qualified for the Conference Premier play-offs. After beating Luton Town 2–0 on aggregate, York were defeated 3–1 by Oxford United in the 2010 Conference Premier play-off Final, resulting in a seventh consecutive season of Conference football.

York reached the fourth round of the FA Trophy, being beaten 2–1 by eventual champions Barrow. An FA Cup run saw the team beat League Two team Crewe Alexandra 3–2 and play Premier League team Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium, with York taking the lead in the game but eventually losing 3–1. Richard Brodie was the club's top goalscorer for a second season running after scoring 34 goals, with 26 in the league, four in the FA Cup, three in the FA Trophy and one in the play-offs. Michael Ingham was voted Clubman of the Year.

Background

Manager Colin Walker was sacked early in the 2008–09 season and former Port Vale manager Martin Foyle was appointed as his successor.[2][3] The team finished the season in 17th position in the Conference Premier table and were defeated 2–0 by Stevenage Borough in the FA Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium.[4][5] Steven Hogg, Daniel McBreen, Jonathan McDonald, Josh Radcliffe, Mark Robinson, Simon Rusk, Liam Shepherd and Christian Smith were all released by York,[6] while Mark Greaves was later told his contract would not be renewed.[7] Andy Ferrell, Craig Nelthorpe, Levi Mackin, James Meredith and Richard Pacquette were all signed in May.[8][9] Michael Rankine signed, with Craig Farrell moving in the other direction to Rushden & Diamonds,[10] and youth team striker Michael Emmerson signed a professional contract.[11] June also saw the arrivals of Alex Lawless, Neil Barrett and Alan O'Hare.[12][13][14]

December

Brodie scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory at Rushden.[66] Foyle and Brodie respectively were named as the Conference Premier Manager and Player of the Month for November.[67] Mansfield agreed to extend Graham's loan until January 2010, when he would sign for the club permanently.[68] Goals from Carruthers and Brodie gave York a 2–1 victory over Wrexham, which equalled the club record for successive victories in all competitions with eight.[69] Graham was to return to Mansfield after talks over his loan extension fell through,[70] although the deal was later completed.[71] Youth team defender Dean Lisles was promoted to the first team squad.[72] York drew 0–0 at Conference North team Hinckley United in the first round of the FA Trophy,[73] and the replay at home was won 3–1, with Brodie scoring York's goals.[74] York beat fellow play-off contenders Mansfield 3–0 on Boxing Day, with Brodie and Gash scoring.[75] Winger Berry was released after failing to make an appearance, while striker Emmerson was loaned out to Ossett Town.[76]

Neil Barrett scored for York in their 3–1 defeat by Premier League team Stoke City in the FA Cup third round.

York were defeated 3–1 by Premier League team Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium in the FA Cup third round, after having taken the lead after Barrett scored a header from a Lawless free kick.[77] Carruthers and Graham signed for the club permanently, with the former signing for 18 months and the latter until the end of the season.[78] Gash, Ingham, Nelthorpe and Rankine appeared at York Magistrates' Court after being charged with affray.[79] York beat Hayes 4–1 at home, with Carruthers, Brodie and Gall scoring.[80] A 0–0 draw at Newport County meant York would have a replay in the FA Trophy second round.[81] Midfielder Courtney Pitt joined from Cambridge on loan for the rest of the season, with Russell moving the other way, while Nelthorpe was loaned out to Luton and Gall extended his contract until the end of the season.[82] Barrett scored the only goal with a shot from outside the box to give York a 1–0 victory at Cambridge.[83] York won the FA Trophy second round replay 1–0, with Pacquette scoring the winning goal in stoppage time.[84] O'Hare was loaned back to Gainsborough for the rest of the season.[85] York beat Corby Town in the FA Trophy third round, with Ferrell scoring a penalty in a 1–0 victory.[86]

March

A 2–1 defeat at Barrow saw the team knocked out of the FA Trophy in the quarter-finals, with Pacquette scoring for York.[97] York suffered a second successive defeat in the league after being beaten 2–1 by Forest Green Rovers, with Mackin scoring his first goal for York.[98] Chester's expulsion from the Football Conference resulted in York having the three points gained against them from a 3–2 victory expunged, meaning the team moved down to 6th in the table.[99] York were defeated 2–1 at home against Salisbury, after Sangaré had put the team in the lead.[100] Chesterfield midfielder Paul Harsley was signed on loan until the end of the season,[101] and he made his debut in a 0–0 draw at Altrincham, which ended a run of three consecutive defeats.[102] York's first victory in six league games came after a 1–0 victory over Mansfield, with Pitt scoring his first for the club.[103] Andy McWilliams was loaned out to Northern Premier League Premier Division team Whitby Town for four weeks.[104] A second successive victory came after Barrett scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory over Kidderminster.[105] Graham scored his first goal for the club in a 1–1 draw with Tamworth, who equalised through former York defender Chris Smith.[106] A 4–0 victory at Grays Athletic saw Brodie score his first goals in 12 games, with Harsley and Barrett also scoring.[107][108]

April

Michael Ingham was named the season's Clubman of the Year.

York beat Altrincham 2–1 after going behind to a Chris Denham goal, with McGurk scoring the equaliser and Brodie scoring the winning goal with a stoppage time penalty.[109] This was followed by a 5–0 victory over AFC Wimbledon, with Rankine scoring goals in both halves and Brodie scoring a first half hat-trick.[110] A seven-match unbeaten run came to an end when York were beaten 3–1 at Eastbourne, conceding three goals in the first 32 minutes before Rankine scored a penalty to finish the scoring.[111] York's place in the play-offs was secured after a 3–0 victory over Barrow, with goals coming from Brodie and Gash.[112] Before York's game against Grays, the final home game of the season prior to the play-offs, Ingham was named as the Clubman of the Year.[113] The game finished in a 1–1 draw, with Brodie giving York the lead before Duran Reynolds equalised for Grays on 89 minutes.[114] The team finished the league season after a 1–0 defeat by champions Stevenage, meaning York finished the season in fifth place in the Conference Premier table and they would play Luton in the play-off semi-finals.[115] Brodie scored on 89 minutes to give York a 1–0 victory over Luton in the play-off semi-final first leg.[116]

May and June

York won the second leg 1–0 through a Carruthers goal, meaning the tie was won 2–0 on aggregate.[117] Following the match, Brodie and Carruthers were hit by coins with the squad being forced to leave the ground through the back of a stand after having missiles thrown at them by a section of Luton fans.[118] Russell left to join Cambridge permanently after making no appearances for York during the season.[119] The team lost the play-off Final 3–1 to Oxford at Wembley, with York's goal coming from a Ryan Clarke own goal.[120] After the end of the season, the club announced Clarke, Gall, Mimms, Nelthorpe, O'Hare and Pacquette were to be released when their contracts expired on 30 June, while Miotto, Smith and Sangaré were in negotiations over new contracts, Graham, Mackin and Purkiss were offered new contracts and youth team players Jamie Hopcutt and Lisles were offered professional contracts.[121] Purkiss rejected the offer of a new contract a day later, and although Foyle said "The door is still open and I might try to help him in another way",[122] he eventually signed for Oxford.[123] Smith rejected talks with the club and instead signed for Mansfield.[124]

York's first summer signings were made after defenders Duane Courtney and Greg Young joined from Kidderminster and Altrincham respectively, while Mackin signed a new contract.[125] Sangaré signed a new short-term six-month contract, which would keep him at the club until 25 December.[126] Graham turned down a new two-year contract signed for former club Kettering.[127] At the Football Conference's Annual Presentation Dinner, Brodie was named the division's Player of the Year and a member of the Team of the Year.[128] Blackburn Rovers winger Andy Haworth arrived on trial, with a view to signing on a season-long loan.[129] Winger Peter Till became York's third summer signing after joining from Walsall on a one-year contract.[130]
