The 2009-10 season marks Burnley's 127th year as a football club. This is Burnley's first ever season in the Premier League, thus bringing to an end the club's 33-year absence from the top flight of English football.
News
01.06.09: Burnley release out-of-contract trio Steve Jones, Gábor Király and Alan Mahon, whilst new deals are offered to Graham Alexander, Adam Kay and Alex MacDonald.[1]
17.06.09: The 2009-10 Premier League fixtures are announced.[2]
18.06.09: Owen Coyle signs a contract extension at Turf Moor to stay with Burnley until the end of the 2012-13 season.[3]
29.06.09: Graham Alexander signs a one-year contract extension to stay at Turf Moor until the end of the 2009-10 season.[4]
30.06.09: Burnley complete their first summer signing with the capture of Derby County's Tyrone Mears for a fee of around £500,000.[5] Burnley make their second summer signing later the same day when Steven Fletcher signs from Hibernian for a club record fee of £3,000,000.[6]
01.07.09: David Edgar becomes Burnley's third signing in two days, following his arrival from Newcastle United on a four-year deal.[7]
01.07.09: The Cricket Field Stand for the 2009-10 season will be used to house both home and away supporters. This will mark the first time in 13 years Burnley fans have occupied all four sides of Turf Moor.[8]
10.07.09: Burnley midfielder Alex MacDonald joins Scottish Premier League side Falikirk on a six-month loan.[9]
12.07.09: Tommy Cummings, a key member of Burnley's 1959-60 Championship winning team, passes away at the age of 80.
14.07.09: Brian Easton signs for Burnley for a fee of £350,000 plus incentives from Hamilton Academical.[10]
15.07.09: Richard Eckersley signs from Manchester United, making him Burnley's second newcomer to the club in as many days.[11]
05.08.09: Besart Berisha is sold to Second Bundesliga team Arminia Bielefeld for a fee of £75,000 without ever making a competitive appearance for the club.
06.08.09: Fernando Guerrero signs from Independiente del Valle on a season-long loan with the option of making the transfer permanent at the end of the season.[12]
13.08.09: Two days before the start of the new Premier League season, both Chris McCann and Jay Rodriguez sign new two-year deals to keep them at Turf Moor until the summer of 2011.[13]
15.08.09: Burnley begin life in the Premier League at Stoke City. Tyrone Mears, Steven Fletcher and Fernando Guerrero make their debuts for the Clarets in the 2-0 loss.
18.08.09: André Bikey signs for Burnley in a three-year deal from Reading for an undisclosed fee, making him Burnley's seventh signing of the summer.[14]
19.08.09: Robbie Blake goes down in history as the scorer of Burnley's first goal in Premier League football. The Clarets go on to win the encounter against the reigning champions of England, Manchester United, 1-0 at Turf Moor. André Bikey also makes his debut for the club.
21.08.09: Burnley youngsters Adam Kay and Chris Lynch join Chester City on loan until January 2010.[15]
01.09.09: Burnley complete the signing of 16-year-old striker Joe McKee from Livingston and will join the football club's Scholarship Scheme as a first year trainee.[16]
01.09.09: On transfer deadline day, Burnley sign former England international David Nugent on a six-month loan from Portsmouth with a view to either a loan extension or a permanent deal.[17]
04.09.09: Burnley decide to host an impromptu friendly against Accrington Stanley at Turf Moor, to be played four days later, with all gate receipts going towards the "Save our Stanley" campaign.[18]
19.09.09: Burnley's match versus Sunderland marks Owen Coyle's 100th game in charge at the club. Burnley won the match 3-1 with Graham Alexander scoring from the penalty spot and David Nugent coming on from the bench to score twice on his home debut. The win maintained Burnley's 100% home record, making them the first newly promoted team to win their first three Premier League home games since bitter rivals Blackburn Rovers produced the same feat in the 1992-93 season.
03.10.09: Burnley beat Birmingham City 2-1 at Turf Moor to put the Clarets into the record books as they become the first newly promoted club to chalk up four successive home victories at the start of a Premier League season.[19]
07.10.09: Burnley complete the signing of goalkeeper Jonathan Lund until the end of the season as a free agent.[20]
18.10.09: Robbie Blake becomes Burnley's first ever scorer of a Premier League away goal in the 3-2 derby defeat at Blackburn Rovers. The game also marked Brian Jensen's 250th appearance for Burnley and his 300th appearance in English football.
24.10.09: Burnley's 100% home record is broken by Wigan Athletic in a 3-1 loss.
31.10.09: Burnley's match against Hull City marks Graham Alexander's 100th appearance for the Clarets and his 900th in professional football, Alexander scored both goals in the 2-0 victory over the Tigers at Turf Moor.[21]
07.11.09: Burnley gain their first ever Premier League away point at Manchester City in a thrilling 3-3 draw.
22.11.09: This date marks Owen Coyle's second year anniversary as Burnley manager.[22]
25.11.09: Burnley complete the signing of 16-year-old Republic of Ireland U-17 international centre-back Neil Yadolahi, who will join the football club's Scholarship Scheme as a first year trainee.[23]
26.11.09: The Clarets complete the signing of Cork City defender Kevin Long for a six-figure fee on a three-and-a-half-year deal. The 19-year-old defender will join Burnley's first-team squad in January 2010.[24]
16.12.09: The visit of Arsenal to Turf Moor marks Burnley's 1000th top-flight match at Turf Moor, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.[25]
24.12.09: Burnley agree a compensation package worth over £300,000 with Newcastle United for David Edgar.[26]
05.01.10: Owen Coyle leaves Burnley to manage Bolton Wanderers.[27]
13.01.10: Brian Laws is named as the new manager of Burnley Football Club.[28]
16.01.10: Manchester United v Burnley saw Brian Laws take charge of The Clarets for the first time. The attendance of 75,120 was the highest to ever witness a Burnley league game in history. The final score resulted in a 3-0 loss. David Edgar also made his Clarets début.
18.01.10: Remco van der Schaaf made a loan move to Danish football club Brøndby IF in an 18-month deal, this will see out van der Schaaf's contract with Burnley.[29]
22.01.10: Brian Laws makes France under-21 international striker Frédéric Nimani his first signing as manager of Burnley Football Club. The Clarets agreed a five-month loan deal with AS Monaco with a view to a possible permanent deal.[30]
27.01.10: Burnley sign the former Manchester City and England under-21 international goalkeeper, Nicky Weaver until the end of the season after ending a spell with Scottish Premier League side Dundee United.[31]
27.01.10: Burnley complete their second signing of the day, Leon Cort signs from Stoke City for £1.5 million on a three-and-a-half year deal.[32]
27.01.10: Brian Laws completes Burnley's third new signing in as many days, Danny Fox signs from Celtic for an undisclosed fee on a three-and-a-half year contract.[33]
Team kit
The team kits for the 2009-10 season are produced by Erreà and the shirt sponsor is Cooke Oils. Both the home and away kits have been designed to replicate those worn by the Burnley team of 1960, when they were last crowned the champions of English football 50 years ago. The traditional V-neck claret and blue home jersey features the 50th anniversary logo, is embroidered with the club crest worn in that era and is finished a with claret and blue trim on the neck and sleeves and accompanied by plain white shorts and claret and blue hooped stockings identical to those worn by The Clarets when they won the First Division title. The away jersey is a white shirt with claret and blue trim on the V-neck and sleeves with black shorts and white stockings with claret and blue trim.
