The 2007–08 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 104th season in existence and the club's 74th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal, the newly created Taça da Liga and the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. Benfica qualified for the Champions League by coming third in the previous Primeira Liga.

In the Primeira Liga, Benfica ended in fourth position, despite being second for most of the season. It was the worst finish of president Luís Filipe Vieira, with Benfica ending 17 points behind the winners and failing qualification for the UEFA Champions League, for the first time since the 2001–02 season.

In the Taça de Portugal, Benfica reached the semi-finals, losing 5–3 at Sporting CP.[3]

In the European competitions, Benfica beat Copenhagen in the third qualifying round of the Champions League, reaching the group stage, finishing in third again, being relegated to the 2007–08 UEFA Cup, which ended in the round of 16 at the hands of Getafe CF.[4]

Season summary

Preseason

Following a disappointing season where the lack of depth on the squad was one of the problems during the title race, Benfica set out to improve the overall quality of their players. With José Veiga now only assisting in some deals, president Luís Filipe Vieira was in charge of building the squad. He acted as sporting director since roughly May 2001,[5] till March 2004, when he appointed José Veiga.[6] Benfica also changed its approach to football, spending much more on individual players, with more than €30 million spend.[7] He purchased Oscar Cardozo for €9 million, to be the team main striker, but also a large number of wingers, with Fábio Coentrão, Di María, Freddy Adu, Cristian Rodriguez and Maxi Pereira. Fernando Santos tactic, didn't use wingers, playing in a 4-4-2 diamond, with two midfielders linking the team, mostly Katsouranis and Karagounis,[8] forcing him to practise other tactics, like the 4-3-3 in just 2 weeks, before official matches begun.[9] The original team was seriously remodelled, losing Karagounis which was coming out of a good second half of season, and also Miccoli, with Benfica unwilling to pay the 2M per year he earned. The bigger blow, however, was the sale of Simão Sabrosa. He represented the club for 6 seasons, and had a good individual season, winning Primeira Liga Footballer of the Year for 2006–07.[10] Other problems troubled his preseason, with Manuel Fernandes refusing to join the team in Copenhagen, forcing a sale to Everton.[11] And Anderson, wanting to return to Brazil, to be close to his son, which had a rare disease.[12]

League

In the first match of the season, Benfica travelled to Porto to face newly-promoted Leixões. It struggled to win, scoring in the 89th minute, but conceding in the 94th, losing their first points of the season.[13] Fernando Santos was immediately sacked and replaced by José António Camacho.[14] He last managed the team in 2003–04, winning the Portuguese Cup against Mourinho's Porto. In his first match back, he drew against Guimarães at home, in a dull game, mostly played in the midfield.[15] Benfica earn his first game in the third matchday, comfortably beating Nacional da Madeira with Cardozo scoring a double.[16] After the international break for national teams, Benfica won its first game at home, with Rui Costa in evidence.[17] Next, Benfica went to Braga face the local team, which had beaten them in the two previous seasons, managing to draw nil-nil, in a unispired performance.[18] The team then faced Sporting at home, in an intense match, which ended in another draw, with both teams complaining about referee Pedro Henriques.[19] The Eagles performances improved, winning in Leiria with Nuno Gomes scoring a double,[20] followed by another victory, now against Maritimo, with Freddy Adu scoring a late goal, and Butt defending a penalty after Quim was sentoff.[21] The string of good results continued, with a win in Paços de Ferreira, with another late goal, therefore, reducing to 6 points the difference to Porto.[22] Next, Benfica trashed Boavista in a 6–1 win, in the best performance of the season, reducing the distance to Porto to just 4 points.[23] In Coimbra, Benfica had its fifth straight win, with late goals from Luisão and Adu.[24] Benfica was 4 points away from Porto, facing them next, at home, and like the year before, a win was vital for the title race. However, Benfica was thoroughly outplayed during the match, with Quaresma scoring the winner in the first league loss since 18 November 2006.[25] The defeat against Porto crushed the team spirit, with another loss following, now against Belenenses.[26] The team briefly recovered, with a win against Estrela da Amadora.[27] In Setúbal, with Benfica making a poor match, Luisão and Katsouranis started insulting and pushing each other, succumbing both to the immense pressure the team was on. Mantorras scored but Edinho equalized near the end.[28] In the next round, another poor performance, facing Leixões at home, Benfica nearly lost, with two strikes on the woodwork, in a nil-nil draw.[29] Benfica returned in good fashion, beating Guimarães with a double from Cardozo,[30] but lost more points at home, drawing Nacional in another poor performance.[31] Benfica then beat Naval in Figueira da Foz with goals from Rodriguez and Nuno Assis, only their third win in eight matches.[32] In the next match, Benfica faced Braga, losing another 2 points in a one-one draw, climbing to 13 the points lost at home.[33] The next away match was in Alvalade, and without David Luiz, Luisão, Petit and Nuno Gomes. Benfica tied with a goal from Cardozo in a cross from Rui Costa.[34] In matchday 22, Benfica drew União de Leiria, with the visitors team in front in half-time, Benfica scored two goals in 10 minutes, but another goal shortly after from Leiria devastated the team, with Porto now 14 points ahead.[35] Camacho resigned immediately, blaming the lack of motivation from the players, as well his inability to motivate them.[36] Former glory Chalana replaced him.[37] The string of bad results continued, with Benfica achieving a fifth straight draw in Madeira, against Maritimo, they last victory being nearly a month earlier.[38] Benfica finally returned to victories, beating Paços de Ferreira 4–1, with Rui Costa having an inspired night, being Man of the Match.[39] This, however, was short notice, with another draw, agains Boavista in Bessa, their 12th of the season.[40] The team performance degraded further, being outplayed by Académica at home 3–0, losing the second place and tumbling to fourth, behind Vitória de Guimarães and Sporting and 21 points behind Porto.[41] Visiting Porto next, which had conquered the league early in the month, Benfica was again defeated, never posing a real danger to the local team.[42] Benfica won again, 3 matchdays later, beating Belenenses by two-nil, now only racing for a Champions League place.[43] They dropped points again, in a away draw against Estrela da Amadora, which was having financial problems, with unpaid salaries, in another poor performance.[44] In the last matchday, with Rui Costa retiring, Benfica beat Vitória de Setúbal 3–0.[45] Benfica finished in fourth place, one point behind Guimarães, missing the Champions League for the first time since 2001–02. A troubled preseason, and the team's inability to cope with the defeat on 1 December against Porto, were some of the causes of this disappointing season.

Portuguese Cup

In the Portuguese Cup, Benfica attempted a record 25th win. They faced Académica at home, beating them easily and progressing to the fifth round.[46] Facing Feirense at home, Cardozo untied a match that was proving hard to win, helping Benfica progress.[47] Playing at home in the sixth round, they beat comfortably Paços de Ferreira in a 4–1 victory with Cardozo scoring a double.[48] In the quarter-final, Benfica beat Moreirense at home with goals from Rui Costa and Makukula.[49] In the semi-finals, Benfica travelled to Alvalade. Benfica led by 2–0 at half-time in a good performance from Di María, but Sporting overturned that deficit with three goals in 8 minutes. Rodriguez still tied but another two goals from Sporting set the final score, with Benfica crashing out of Portuguese Cup.[50]

League Cup

In the newly created League Cup, intended to give more playing time to younger players. Benfica faced Estrela da Amadora in the third round, nearly losing, with Adu scoring a equalizer in overtime, and then winning 5-4 in penalties.[51] In the fourth round, it faced Vitória de Setúbal, again suffering to draw, with Adu scoring another goal in overtime.[52] In the replay match, Vitória triumphed, eliminating Benfica from the first edition of the League Cup.[53]

Europe

Since finishing in third the previous year, Benfica had to pass the third qualifying round. They were paired with Copenhagen, a team they had faced a year before. With Rui Costa scoring a thunderous shot four minutes from the end, Benfica travelled to Denmark with a 2–1 lead.[54] In the return journey, a goal from Katsouranis proved enough to secure a 3–1 aggregate victory, with Benfica qualifying to the group stage. In the draw, Benfica was set to face AC Milan, the reigning European champion, Shaktar Donestk and again Celtic. In the first matchday, facing Milan in San Siro, Pirlo put the Milanese in the front with a free-kick, and a 18 year old Miguel Vitor made a bad pass that ended in Káká, that passed it to Pirlo and then Inzaghi to score. Cardozo had opportunities to score but couldn't hit the target, finally Nuno Gomes scoring from a Katsouranis cross.[55] Next, Benfica faced Shaktar at home, and lost one-nil, squandering away a number of opportunities to equalize.[56] Facing Celtic at home, a Cardozo goal three minutes from regular time finally broke down a disciplined Celtic FC defence, giving the club the first three points.[57] In the return trip, Celtic beat Benfica with a shot from Aiden McGeady, that deflected off Luisão beating Quim. Notably, Binya was sentoff after a dangerous tackle.[58] In match five, Benfica faced Milan at home, suffering a early goal from Pirlo, as he ran past defenders unchallenged. Maxi Pereira equalized with a remarkable shot five minutes later. However, as Celtic had beat Shaktar at home, Benfica was out of Champions League.[59] In the final matchday, only fighting for UEFA Cup place, Benfica beat Shaktar in Ukraine, with Cardozo scoring a double, first from a mistake and then from a Maxi Pereira cross, finishing the group stage in third with 7 points.[60]

In the UEFA Cup, Benfica faced Nürnberg in the Round of 32, beating them with a goal from Makukula in a poor team performance, but enough to take a slender advantage ahead of the second leg.[61] In Germany, a shocking performance from Edcarlos and Luis Filipe very nearly resulted in elimination. While trailing 2–0, two late goals equalized the match and sent Benfica through.[62] In the Round of 16, Benfica faced Getafe from Madrid. In the first leg, Cardozo hit defender Belenguer after swinging an arm trying to reach a high-ball and was sentoff. Getafe easily beat a 10 men Benfica, with Mantorras giving a late hope.[63] In the second leg, with Camacho replaced by Fernando Chalana, a second half goal from Albin was enough to beat Benfica, as the Reds were out of European competitions.[64]
