The 2006–07 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 103rd season in existence and the club's 73rd consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal and the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. Benfica qualified for the Champions League by coming third in the previous Primeira Liga.

Fernando Santos replaced Ronald Koeman which was sacked. In the Primeira Liga, now reduced to 15 clubs, Benfica ended in third, having a chance to pass to the lead when it drawed Porto in the 23rd matchday, then losing the second placed and finishing third, securing a spot in the third qualifying round of next year's Champions League.

The Taça de Portugal ended at the hands of Varzim in the sixth round.

In European competitions, Benfica beat Austria Wien in the third qualifying round reaching the group stage for second time in a row, ending third behind Manchester United and Celtic, beating Copenhagen for the UEFA Cup placed. In the UEFA Cup, Benfica reached the quarter-finals, losing 3–2 on aggregate to eventual runners-up Espanyol.

President Luís Filipe Vieira ran alone for a second term.[3]

Season summary

Preseason

In the aftermath of exiting of Ronald Koeman, Benfica quickly selected, former Porto and Sporting manager, and confessed supporter, Fernado Santos.[4] Santos abandoned Koeman 4-3-3 and opted for a 4–4–2 diamond or 4–1–2–1–2. The defence was left unchanged with Quim in the keeper's position, in the center, Luisão and Anderson, the left , Léo, and on the right, Nélson. Petit remained the team defensive midfielder, with Katsouranis on the right hand side and Karagounis on the left side, supporting Simão. At the front, Miccoli and Nuno Gomes partnered often.[5] In the transfer window, Rui Costa rejoined after 12 years abroad.

League

In the Primeira Liga, Benfica first game, with Belenenses was postponed in the wake of the Mateus affair,[6] so the their first match was in 9 September against Boavista with international duty in between, nearly twenty days since they last played, for the Champions League third qualifying round.[7] Unsuspectingly, Benfica struggled to perform and was outplayed with a clear three-nil in Bessa.[8] In the following matchday, without Rui Costa, Petit and Nuno Gomes, Benfica beat Nacional with a sole goal from Luisão, earning his first points.[9] However, against Paços de Ferreira, it lost points again, after Leo being sentoff, Benfica conceded a goal at 93rd minute, being eight points away from the leader, although with a game less.[10][11] Perfomances improved in following weeks, with a clear victory against Desportivo Aves, with Rui Costa being influential in the second half,[12] followed by a four-nil in Leiria,[13] and easy win against Estrela da Amadora.[14] Next, Benfica travelled to Dragão, where it faced Porto which lead the league. Trailing by two nil after the first twenty minutes, the Reds managed to tie the match with goals from Katsouranis and Nuno Gomes in the second half, but an irregular throw-in and poor defending led to another goals suffered in extra-time, now resulting in a loss.[15] They bounced back with a clear three-nil win against Beira-Mar,[16] but lost track again, suffering a 3–1 defeat in Braga, in the midst of internal problems regarding football director José Veiga which resigned after personal reasons.[17][18] Benfica returned to Estádio da Luz, beating Maritimo two-one, in a solid performance.[19] In the next round, Benfica played in Alvalade, beating Sporting 2–0, reducing distances to the first place.[20] However, after being eliminated from the Champions League, Benfica went no bether than nil-nil in Figueira da Foz, losing points in the title race.[21] Following this disappointing result, Benfica regain their momentum, beating Vitória Setúbal by three-nil,[22] Belenenses by four-nil in a game from matchday 1,[23] went to Coimbra beat the local team by two-nil,[24] and beat Belenenses in the round trip, and climbed to second post, closing the distance to Porto to just five points.[25] Benfica then wasted two points at home against Boavista, hitting the bar four times, in a good performance but scoreless.[26] It then entered it's best period of the season, with five straight wins, beating Nacional in Madeira by two-nil,[27] Paços de Ferreira at home,[28] Desportivo de Aves away,[29] União de Leiria at home,[30] and finally, Estrela da Amadora away.[31] Benfica had managed to pull away from Sporting, having 5 point advantage in the second place, but also shortened the distance to Porto in the lead to just one point, with the next match being a Benfica-Porto. With sixty-three thousand fans behind them, the Reds were unable to beat Porto, tieing one-nil, wasting the opportunity to pass to the top of the league.[32] In the next matchday, with six rounds to play, Benfica nearly lost in Aveiro against Beira-Mar, with a ghost penalty won by Simão in the last minute preventing that.[33] Porto had pushed a 4 point advantage again, and Sporting closed the difference to one point. With another draw, now against Braga at home, Benfica lost the second place and opened a 5 point gap to the lead, seriously compromising their title chances.[34] A win in Madeira helped keep the hope alive,[35] but another opportunity lost with a home draw against Sporting,[36] meant the title was almost impossible, with a four point difference with just 3 rounds to go. Three straight wins, against Naval,[37] Vitória de Setúbal,[38] and finally Académica, only helped secure a sport in the next year Champions League.[39] A irregular team throughout the season, Benfica had an opportunity to pass to the front but squandered way, with three straght draws, removing himself from the title and even the second place.

Cup

In the Portuguese Cup, Benfica faced Third Division team Oliveira do Bairro in the Fourth round, winning comfortably by five-nill.[40] In the Fifth round, a First Division team, Leiria, caused a lot of problems, but a good performance from Mantorras resolved it.[41] Next it faced Varzim, with formed glory Diamantino Miranda at the helm, Benfica was surprised, being knocked out of the competition.[42]

Europe

After ending in third, the year before, Benfica wanted to join Porto and Sporting in the Champions League, with three Portuguese teams for the first time in the group stage. For that, that had to pass Austria Wien. In the first leg, a back-heeled goal from Nuno Gomes put Benfica in front in a one-nil final result.[43] At home, a clear three-nil, meant Benfica had make history.[44] Benfica ended in Group F with FC København, Celtic FC and Manchester United.[45] In the first match, in Copenhagen, Benfica earned their first points in a goalless draw against the local team.[46] Next, they faced United at home, an opponent they defeated in last December, but this time, they didn't fare so well, losing one-nil.[47] In the third matchday, in Glasgow, Benfica was throughy outplayed, losing three-nil, opening a five point distance between them.[48] In the return trip, in Lisbon, Benfica enacted their revenge with another three-nil, now, at their favor, closing the distance to two points.[49] Facing FC København in Lisbon, the Reds earned a convincing 3–1 victory, keep them 2 points clear of the qualification , but needing to win in Manchester to pass, since Celtic had beat United.[50] A early goal from Nélson gave them hope needed, but United quicly responded with three goals, throwing Benfica to the UEFA Cup, with 7 points in six matches, two shy of qualification.[51]

In the UEFA Cup, Benfica faced Dinamo Bucureşti in the Round of 32, with the first leg at home. A goal from Miccoli in the last minute was enough to beat the Romanians at home.[52] In Bucharest, Benfica conceded a goal but hit back with second-half goals from Anderson and Konstantinos Katsouranis to go through 3–1 on aggregate.[53] In the Round of 16, it faced Paris Saint-Germain. In Paris, it scored first by Simão but Portuguese striker Pauleta equalized and Pierre-Alain Frau made it 2–1, earning Paris Saint-Germain FC a narrow first-leg lead. Benfica had lost Luisão in the half hour to injury and David Luiz made his debut..[54] At home, Benfica struggled to beat them, after a early goal from Simão, Pauleta equalized again, and after relenteless pressing, a beautiful goal from Petit put Benfica equal in the aggregate score, and a 89th-minute penalty ended PSG resistance and put Benfica into the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.[55] Next, Benfica faced Spaniards Espanyol. In the first-leg, while losing three-nil before the hour-mark, Benfica managed to re-enter the game with 2 goals in quick sucession, however, Fernando Santos told the team to easy back, so 3–2 was the final result.[56] In the second-leg, Benfica pressed hard, especially in the second half, but a combination of goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz and the woodwork saved Espanyol from defeat, putting them in the semi-finals.[57]
