Sporting C.P. reached the UEFA Cup final at home to CSKA Moscow and finished a close third in the Primeira Liga in a successful season, that ended in a huge anticlimax, as the clubs' dream of a historical League and European double fell into pieces with a derby loss at the hands of Benfica, and the surprise loss to CSKA in the UEFA Cup final. The season marked the breakthrough of Brazilian striker Liédson, who scored 25 league goals.
