The 2004–05 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 101st season in existence and the club's 71st consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal and the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. Benfica qualified for the Champions League by finishing 2nd in the previous Primeira Liga. Benfica also contested the Supertaça for the first time since 1996.

In Giovanni Trapattoni only season in charge, Benfica won the Primeira Liga for a 31st time, its first league title since 1994, after an 11-year wait, the longest in club history. The 65 points claimed by Benfica in the 2004–05 season was actually nine points less than in the previous season. An extremely irregular season by the Big Three, in which Benfica was the most regular, secured the title.

In the Taça de Portugal, Benfica reached the final for a second time in a row, and could claim a double for the first time since 1987, but was surprised by Vitória Setúbal.

For the European competitions, Benfica was quickly dispatched by Anderlecht in the Champions League third qualifying round. Being relegated to the UEFA Cup, it successfully passed his group in second place, but lost in the first knockout round with eventual winners CSKA Moscow.

Season summary

Pre-season

Following Camacho exit to Real Madrid,[1] Benfica hired Giovanni Trapattoni, the then 65-year-old had already won 7 Serie A's and one Bundesliga[2] and followed the president's decision to have an experient manager.[3] He established a defensive and cautious style of play to minimise the team inexperience, since for the Italian manager only Petit and Zlatko Zahovič had experienced in winning Championships.[4] The team was usually set up with Luisão and Ricardo Rocha in the centre of the defence, while in the left side, Fyssas and Manuel dos Santos were most often used, and on the right, Miguel and later João Pereira were the main starters. In the midfield, Petit played alongside teenager, Manuel Fernandes, with Geovanni on the right wing and Simão in the left, with first Zahovič, and then Nuno Assis supporting either Šokota or Nuno Gomes.[5][6][7] In the Portuguese Supercup, Benfica loss to a more experienced Porto, with Ricardo Quaresma scoring from a tight angle. It was the tenth lost in the competition.[8]

League

In the Primeira Liga, Benfica started in good manner, winning the first three matches, an away win in Aveiro against the local Beira-Mar, with Karadas scoring twice.[9] At home against Moreirense, with Petit scoring from a free-kick and Karadas assisting for the second goal.[10] And in Coimbra against Académica, with Simão scoring the decisive goal after Karadas and Nuno Gomes entered minutes earlier.[11] They lost its first points at home against Braga, with Benfica playing Sokota and Nuno Gomes upfront, the lack of a midfielder to link the team from the attackers and missed chances by Sokota explained the draw.[12] Benfica returned to victories in Guimarães, with Geovanni scoring from the free-kick at the 91st minute, taking the three points home.[13] However, they lost their first league game of the season, at home against Porto, with Pepe and Nuno Gomes being sentoff after a scuffle between them. In the 80th minute, Petit kicked the ball from distance and allegedly it passed the goal-line, Olegário Benquerença, following his assistant, didn't validate the goal.[14] A week later, the Eagles beat Nacional with Karadas and Sokota both scoring.[15] A period of two months and 18 points loss followed, they started in an away match against Gil Vicente, with Simão tying the match at very last minute, preventing a loss.[16] A clear win against Vitória Setúbal,[17] followed a draw against Marítimo.[18] A week later, Benfica led Rio Ave by 3–1, only to suffer two goals in the second half, with another two points dropped.[19] A loss in Leiria was next, with 12 points lost in little over a month.[20][21] Benfica then entered a period of extreme irregularity, they won Estoril-Praia at home,[22] suffered a defeat away with Belenenses, with Sokota preventing a clear 4–0,[23] return to victories against Penafiel at home,[24] and loss again, now at Alvalade with Liedson scoring twice.[25] They then followed a 4–0 win against Boavista,[26] with another loss in the immediate match, at home against Beira-Mar, with a double from Santiago Silva.[27] At the end of this series of games, Benfica dropped from first to fifth place. But with the elimination from European competitions, Benfica form improved, they won in Guimarães against Moreirense, with Nuno Assis scoring his first goal with the Red shirt.[28] A home win against Académica followed, with the team returning to the top of the table.[29][30] In mid February, Benfica draw at Braga,[31] and won at home against Vitória Guimarães, with a goal from Nuno Assis, a former Vitória player.[32] Then they faced Porto at Estádio do Dragão, where they tied, winning its first points there in ten seasons.[33][34] A 4-game winning stretch followed, with Benfica beating Nacional,[35] Gil Vicente,[36] Vitória Setúbal,[37] and finally Marítimo, with Mantorras scoring the winning goal in a difficult 4–3 win.[38] By now, Benfica was six points clear of second place, but a loss against Rio Ave,[39] and a high pressure draw against União Leiria, with Mantorras scoring in the last minute, jeopardize the title race.[40] Benfica then beat Estoril-Praia at Estádio Algarve, with another goal from Mantorras, which had given 8 points in the last 4 matches.[41][42] In the final four matches, Benfica beat Belenenses,[43] lost at Penafiel,[44] falling to second place behind Sporting, which faced next. Benfica beat Sporting at home, with a goal from Luisão in the 83rd minute,[45] needing only 1 point to win the championship; which it did, when they tied in Bessa, putting an end to 10 years without a league title, conquering their 31st champions title.[46]

Cup

In the Portuguese Cup, Benfica had a favorable draw, facing 4 opponents at home, they beat Oriental,[47] and Oliveirense after extra-time,[48] and then Sporting in a high pressure match, with overtime and penalty shoot-out,[49] the first time a Portuguese Cup derby between the two was decided on penalties. Next, they defeated Beira-Mar,[50] and Estrela da Amadora, although away, still played in Lisbon.[51] In the final, they lost to Vitória Setúbal, with the extreme fatigue of the season being a factor in the loss.[52]

Europe

In the third qualifying round of the Champions League, Benfica faced Anderlecht, and while they managed to win at home, they struggled to do so, with very few goal opportunities and with Belgians creating enough chances to tie the match.[53] In Belgium, a very effective Anderlecht scored in the three opportunities they had, with Argel being sent off after committing a penalty. The team's last presence in the competition had been in 1998–99.[54] In Europe, the competition followed with the qualifying round of the UEFA Cup, with the Slovenians FK Dukla being defeated in both legs.[55][56] In the group stage of the tournament, victories at home against Heerenveen and Dinamo Zagreb, and in Belgium against Beveren, were enough to counter the loss in Germany against Stuttgart.[57][58][59][60] In the round of 32, they were beaten by CSKA Moscow, which had just ended their pre-season. A string of defensive errors in Russia and a lack of pace in Portugal, proved decisive in the playoff.[61][62]
