The 2001 World Men's Handball Championship took place in France from 23 January to 4 February 2001. It was the 17th edition of the World Championship in team handball and the hosts won the championship.

Qualified teams

24 teams were qualified for the first round and dispatched into 4 groups.

Group A :  Czech Republic,  Egypt,  Iceland,  Morocco,  Portugal,  Sweden .

Group B :  Algeria,  Argentina,  Brazil,  France,  Kuwait,  Yugoslavia

Group C :  Croatia,  Greenland,  Germany,  South Korea,  Spain,  United States .

Group D :  Norway,  Russia,  Saudi Arabia,  Slovenia,  Tunisia,  Ukraine .

First round

The first four teams of each group qualify for the round of 16.
