The 2001–02 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 98th season in existence and the club's 68th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Liga and the Taça de Portugal. Benfica failed qualification for the European competition's by finishing 6th in the previous Primeira Liga.[1]

In the Primeira Liga, Toni remained in charged until December, when two league defeats and a early exit in the Taça de Portugal led to his resignation. Jesualdo Ferreira replace him and finished fourth. It was the second time in a row that Benfica missed on European competitions.

Season summary

Pre-season

In the wake of the worst season ever, an unprecedented sixth place.[2] Toni was given renewed confidence in front of the team, [3] with Luis Filipe Vieira appointed as the new Football Director.[4] He started by transfering a number of players that composed the starting lineup, like Ronaldo Guiaro, Dudic, José Calado, Sabry and all of the strikers, which included Pierre Van Hooijdonk and João Tomás.[5] Benfica signed Mantorras, a breakthrough player of Alverca for a record five million Euros, the highest between two clubs in Portugal.[6] In 27 July, it broke the Portuguese transfer record with the signing of Simão Sabrosa for 12 million Euros, a record which stood till 2011.[7] The team was build with Enke on the posts; until Moreira replaced him for contract reasons; on the right, the position belonged to Cabral for the first part and Armando Sá for the second. In the center, Argel and João Manuel Pinto were the most used duo and at the left, Caneira was undisputed. The midfield was settled around Fernando Meira (replaced by Tiago) and Ednilson behind Zahovic, with Simão on the right, Drulovic on the left and Mantorras upfront.

League

Benfica didn't start the league in the best fashion, with a two-all draw against Varzim, with two sent-offs from Pesaresi and Porfirio. Benfica led two-nill, but a penalty and a mistake of Cabral, which cleared a cross into the own-goal, gave a point to the local team, with the Eagles complaining about referee Isodoro Rodrigues after numerous fouls allowed and a ignored penalty.[8] Their first win was in matchday two, beating Salgueiros by two-nil, with Simão making his debut for Benfica.[9] They won their second match in a row (for the first time since 16 February), beating Jorge Jesus's Vitória de Setúbal, with a superb performance from Mantorras, scoring a hat-trick.[10] In day four, Benfica lost two points in Aveiro, after leading 2-0 against locals; an error from Diogo Luis allowed Beira-Mar to reduce in a penalty, and then a double from Fary just after the break put Benfica chasing the goal, which came after Sokota entered, with the final result being a 3-3.[11] Their next match, was a Clássico against Porto, finishing nil-nil, with both teams still looking for the best lineup.[12] In late September, Benfica faced Belenenses, and again found himself leading; just to let the opponent equalize, in the fourth draw of the season.[13] After deciding to build the new Estádio da Luz at 28 September,[14] Benfica beat Alverca by 3-2, with Júlio César scoring a double.[15] In 13 October, against José Mourinho's União de Leiria, Benfica lost another two points, drawing one-all with youth prospect Mawete Júnior scoring his first goal.[16] Manuel Vilarinho remain confident of Toni, claiming

In day nine, Benfica beat Gil Vicente by two-nil, with Mawete scoring again, and Meira sentecing the match, with 10 minutes to play.[18] The next matchday, Benfica won it's first away match eight months later, beating Farense with goals from Miguel and Simão, both making their first of the season.[19] However, the hope of a better season was crippled in a home draw against Vitória de Guimarães, with goalkeeper Palatsi making a exceptional performance.[20] Playing in Braga next, Benfica won with a goal from Mantorras (first in two months), beating them away for the first time since November 1995.[21] In 2 December, the Eagles beat Manuel Fernandes's Santa Clara, in a unsatisfactoy performance, with Simão and Mantorras being the best players on the Benfica side.[22] Six days later, Benfica lost his first match of the season in Paços de Ferreira. With an opportunity to make it to the top of the league, Benfica was unable to revert a 2-1 deficit. In the first goal, Enke kicked the ball with low strengh, ending in the head of Leonardo, that assisted Zé Manel for the opening goal; João Manuel Pinto tied in a loose ball after a set-piece, but Paços de Ferreira scored again in a wide cross by Zé Manel assisting Leonardo, with Pesaresi, João Manuel Pinto and Enke all static.[23] The next day, Luis Filipe Vieira ensured that Toni was still the right man, claiming

It would be an injustice if Toni was sacked.

In day 15, Benfica faced Sporting in the last ever Derby de Lisboa at the old Estádio da Luz. With seventy five thousand fans; Benfica scored first after a foul by Beto inside the box, with Simão converting the penalty kick; as the game started to get tougher, Andrade was sentoff, reducing Benfica to 10, who still managed to score, after a combination of Simão and Zahovic. However, in the 85th, Jardel tripped alone inside the box, with referee Duarte Gomes awarding a penalty. Jardel scored, and two minutes later, scored again, splitting the points.[25] Following a elimination from the Portuguese Cup, Benfica had to win in Bessa for the first time since 1996 to prevent another five match winless period.[26] In Bessa, Benfica started the match conceding a goal. Rui Lima assisted Silva with the ball deflecting on Jorge Ribeiro. The result was unchanged, in the second league defeat of the Reds.[27] Benfica complained of the refereeing of Pedro Proença which saved Paulo Turra from a second yellow card in the 60th minute, and dismissed penalties from Pedro Emanuel over Mantorras and Frechaut over Simão, instead booking Simão for diving.[28] Toni resigned on 27 December,[29] with Benfica wanting the return of José Mourinho,[30] but he refused, since he wanted Jesualdo Ferreira gone, and Vilarinho and Vieira didn't obliged.[31] So Jesualdo Ferreira was appointed manager on 30 December.[32] In his debut as Benfica manager, Jesualdo Ferreira saw his team drop another two points. After Maritimo scored with Bruno assisting Gáucho on a set-piece, Benfica equalized and put on a good performance, but coulnd't unlock the match.[33] Benfica dropped to fifth place, with a record 8 draws.[34] Six games later, Benfica returned to victories, beating Varzim, with goals from Simão, freshly arrived Jankauskas and Carlitos.[35] In 19 January, after the arrival of Tiago Mendes and Armando Sá, the first entered straight into the lineup, Benfica beat Salgueiros 4-1 away, with Jankauskas scoring a double.[36] With Simão suspended on yellow cards, Benfica tied in Setúbal 1-1. Benfica scored first by Carlitos, but poor defending led to the equalizer by Ico, as the team dropped to fifth again.[37] Opening February, Benfica beat Beira-Mar with a clear 4-1, after Simão converted a free-kick, and Jankauskas scored a double on counter-attacks, with Mantorras closing the count.[38] In the visit to Antas on day 22; facing José Mourinho, which joined Porto the month before; Benfica led after a Andersson assisted Simão in 18th minute, with Deco scoring from outside the box before the break; Mourinho replaced Pavlin with Alenitchev at half-time, and in 10 minutes, the game changed to 3-2; first Alenitchev scored from a corner, Capucho then put the ball over Enke and Mantorras reduced after a cross from Jankauskas. The final result was made.[39] In the next matchday, at Estádio da Luz, Benfica beat Belenenses, with Simão scoring the first and assisting Jankauskas for the second in the 96th minute; the six in six matches for the Lituanian.[40] Closing February, Benfica faced Alverca and beat them by 3-1, with Zahovic and João Manuel Pinto scoring in the second half; Alverca reduced, but Drulovic sentenced the score, with the team equalizing with Porto on the third place.[41] In the first matchday of March, Benfica was surprised at home by União de Leiria, now led by Mário Reis, losing 2-0 and compromising the race for the third position. With Mantorras injuried, Sokota recovering from a operation; the Reds lost Jankauskas in the first half, leaving the upfront to Pepa, unsurprisingly without any results.[42] The Eagles recovered quickly with a strong performance from Simão, beating Gil Vicente and matching Porto in the third place again.[43] Benfica isolated himself in third place after beating Farense by five-nil, with Simão having another big performance. Farense complained of a missed penalty by referee Pedro Henriques.[44]

In the visit to Guimarães, Benfica scored first by Miguel after a cross from Drulovic, but before half-time a brawl started, with the match stopped for 15 minutes. Caneira fouled Romeu on the edge of the box, and as Duarte Gomes was to book Caneira for the offense, Romeu headbutted Simão and Augusto Inácio harassed the fourth referee, with both being sentoffs after the fight ended. Guimarães still equalized, but minutes later Duarte Gomes awarded Benfica a penalty, when Simão was pushed by Nuno Assis, which he later converted. Benfica then scored the third and fourth, sentencing the match, as Guimarães complained of a missed penalty, of Caneira over Laelson.[45] In 30th March, Benfica saw his advantage from Porto reduced from four to two, after a home draw with Braga, with the team ressenting the lack of Simão after he got severely injuried in a useless International friendly and was expected to miss 4 to 6 months.[46] The Reds were also without Jankauskas and with Mantorras returning from injury, on the bench. After Braga scored with Ricardo Nascimento assisting Abiodun in a mistake by Cabral. Jesualdo put Mantorras on the match, with the team still managing to equalize in a controversial penalty given by Isidoro Rodrigues, after Carlitos fell inside the box.[47] In the away match in Azores, Benfica lost a further two points and was caught by Porto in the third place. With Miguel as striker, a position he played first in day 26 to replace Jankauskas. Benfica couldn't beat Santa Clara defense, with Zahovic and Drulovic having poor performances, as the team missed Simão and his creativity.[48] In mid-April, Benfica defeated Paços de Ferreira by four-nil, with Mantorras and Jankauskas returning from injuries, as Miguel scored a double.[49] In the return trip of the Derby de Lisboa, Benfica made a positive performance, controlling the match, and reaching advantage with a goal from Jankauskas. Notwithstanding, near the final whistle, Armando missed the opportunity to double the score in a counter-attack, and shortly after, he put a hand in the ball inside the box on a cross from Nalitzis, with Martins dos Santos awarding a penalty that Jardel converted in over-time.[50] Benfica lost the third place and fell behind Porto.[51] In the last match of April, Benfica defeated Boavista, giving the title to Sporting.[52] Sanchez scored first with a Moreira making a mistake, which he apologised. After equalizing with Argel, and with Pesaresi sentoff, Mantorras seized an error from William to make it 2-1, which stood till the end.[53] In the last matchday of the season, and needing to win to have a opportunity to qualify for European competitions. Benfica scored first in a good individual effort from Mantorras, but Gáucho equalized four minutes after half-time; Mantorras scored again in a individual effort, restoring the lead, but Nelo Vingada added Quim alongside Gáucho, and he assisted Kenedy to the 2-2. Marítimo continued to press and then Toni inexplicably touch the ball inside the box in a cross from Kenedy, as Lucilio Baptista whistled for the penalty mark, which Gáucho converted.[54] It was the fifth loss in the league, the confirmation that Benfica was out of UEFA competitions and the second worst finish ever.[55]

Taça de Portugal

In the Cup, in the fourth round, Benfica faced Infesta in Matosinhos, which played in the Third division, beating them comfortably by three-nil, with Mantorras being Man of the Match, crossing for the first goal scored in the own half by Marcelo, and two minutes it winning a penalty, which Drulovic scored.[56] The fifth round, four days after the first defeat in the league, Benfica was nearly defeated at home by Maritimo. With many rotations, including Jorge Ribeiro, Andrade, Rui Baião, Porfírio. Within two minutes after extra-time, Marítimo scored and 4 minutes before the final 120, Zahovic saved Benfica from elimination.[57] In the Replay, Benfica was eliminated with a goal from van der Gaag, with Rui Baião erroring. Mantorras and Simão were brought in but couldn't revert the score, plagued with fatigue.[58]
