The 2001–02 Regionalliga was contested in two divisions as in the previous season. Each division contained 18 teams that played each other twice. Three points were awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss.

Regionalliga Nord

VfB Lübeck won the Nord division and was promoted to the 2. Bundesliga along with runners-up Eintracht Braunschweig. Fortuna Düsseldorf, Fortuna Köln and 1. FC Magdeburg were relegated to the Oberliga.
