The 2000 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 114th staging of the All-Ireland championship since its establishment in 1887. The draw for the 2000 fixtures took place in October 1999. The championship began on 27 May and ended on 10 September 2000. Cork were the defending champions.[1]

Kilkenny secured the title with a 5-15 to 1-14 defeat of Offaly in the All-Ireland final. This was their 26th All-Ireland title, their first in seven championship seasons.

Teams

A total of eighteen teams contested the championship, including sixteen teams from the previous years' championship. Carlow and Westmeath entered the Leinster championship while Roscommon did not field a team.

The Championship

Format

The 2000 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was run on a provincial basis as usual. It was a knockout tournament with pairings drawn at random in the respective provinces - there was no seeds.

Each match was played as a single leg. If a match was drawn there was a replay. If that match ended in a draw a period of extra time was played, however, if both sides were still level at the end of extra-time another replay took place.

Leinster Championship

Round robin: (6 matches) This was a group stage involving six of the "weaker" teams in the province. The top team from this section advanced to the semi-finals.

Semi-finals: (2 matches) The winner of the round robin section joined the other three Leinster teams to make up the semi-final pairings. The two winning teams advanced to the final while the two losing teams were eliminated from the championship.

Final: (1 match) The winners of the two semi-finals contested this game. The winning team advanced to the All-Ireland semi-final while the losing team advanced to the All-Ireland quarter-final.

Munster Championship

Quarter-finals: (2 matches) These were two matches between the first two pairings drawn from the province of Munster. The two losing teams were eliminated from the championship while the two winners advanced to the semi-finals.

Semi-finals: (2 matches) The winners of the two quarter-finals joined the other two Munster teams to make up the semi-final pairings. The two winning teams advanced to the final while the two losing teams were eliminated from the championship.
