The 2000–01 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 97th season in existence and the club's 67th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Liga and the Taça de Portugal. Benfica qualified for the UEFA Cup by finishing 3rd in the previous Primeira Liga.[3]

In the Primeira Liga, Benfica ended in a record low sixth place. It was the club worst ever finished in the Primeira Liga and the first time that Benfica missed on European competitions.

In the Taça de Portugal, Benfica reached the sixth round, before being eliminated by Porto.

In the UEFA Cup, Benfica was eliminated by Swedish team Halmstad, 4–3 on aggregate.

This season is also notable for the change in presidency, when on 28 October 2000, Manuel Vilarinho defeated João Vale e Azevedo in Benfica's most contested elections.[4]

Season summary

Pre-season

After a third place, Heynckes was given the chance for another season, with a squad designed for him. Vale e Azevedo then made the controversial decision of releasing João Vieira Pinto, which was part of the squad since 1992, captain and with over 300 appearances.[5] He also refused Paulo Bento,[6] and Amaral,[7] spending big on players like Marchena or Van Hooijdonk, the latter intended to replace Italy-bound Nuno Gomes.[8][9] For the troubled right-back and left-back positions, Benfica added Dudic to the right, and 20-year old Escalona to the left, with Rojas and Sérgio Nunes as back-ups.[10] The starting line-up changed alot throughout the season, but Enke, Ronaldo, Fernando Meira, Maniche, João Tomás and Van Hooijdonk were usual starters.

League

Benfica started the league with a difficult visit to Porto. Heynckes choose to play a more cautious lineup, with Paulo Madeira as right-back, while Marchena and Van Hooijdonk made their debut. Benfica was unfortunate as it suffered it's first goal in a deflected ball that bounced on Calado and betrayed Enke; The second goal came after Rojas was sentoff for two identical fouls in two minutes, after hitting opponents in sliding tackles. In the freekick, Jorge Costa leaped and beat Enke, with the German failling to clear it. Till the end, only Poborsky threaten Porto keeper.[11] In day 2, Benfica received António Sousa's Beira-Mar, beating comfortably by four-one, with Heynckes opting for a 3-4-3. An early goal from Sabry was followed by a controversial second by Poborsky (Beira-Mar claimed the referee hadn't allowed a free-kick to be beaten, so they stood still), with Maniche and Van Hooijdonk closing the score.[12] In the following day, after International break, Benfica travelled to Leiria, where it nearly lost. After referee José Leirós missed a flagrant penalty over João Tomás in 71st minute; it sentoff Sabry minutes later, with things getting even more complicaded after Éder Gaúcho scored from 38 yards out, with Enke powerless to defend it. If it wasn't for a perfectly converted free-kick from Chano in overtime, the Eagles would loose their second away game.[13] In day 4, Benfica faced Estrela da Amadora at home, with Heynckes opting for a unusual 3-3-3-1 that proved compicated and inconsequential. In the second half, he changed to a 4-4-1-1 which didn't improved until João Tomás joined Van Hooijdonk upfront. Despite this, Estrela scored first with Djalma, minutes after Meira clearing a ball off the line; But as the game ended, Van Hooijdonk scored a double, first on a powerful shot and then receiveing, turning and scoring, surrounded by opponents.[14] In the post-match conference, Heynckes lost it's temper, criticizing the fans for booing the team and showing him white scarfs, claiming

I can't take this club anymore. If they want me gone, I'll leave tomorrow.

— Heynckes in post-match conference.[15]

He was sacked in the day after.[16] President Vale e Azevedo consulted with Toni that same day, with scheduled talks for the next day.[17] However, Vale e Azevedo chose 37-year old José Mourinho as main coach, with Mozer assisting,[18] with Mourinho making his debut as manager, after years working as interpreter for Bobby Robson and then Louis van Gaal.[19] Benfica was in midst of a Presidential race, with future President Manuel Vilarinho claiming that Vale e Azevedo made a mistake, disrespected Toni and that he had better put a termination clause, in case he got elected.[20] The fans followed the same opinion, showing skepticism over the nomination of a interpreter, supporting the idea of a more experienced manager, like Toni.[21] In his debut as manager, against Boavista away; Mourinho opted for a 4-3-3 brought from Barcelona, with Meira as defensive midfielder, with Maniche and Poborsky more advanced. However, almost immediately, Benfica conceded, with Rojas outpaced, Marchena left to compensate and Dudic stood static as Duda scored from the cross. Despite the numerous alterations, the result was unchanged.[22] In early October, Benfica faced Manuel Cajuda's Braga, which led the table. As the Reds failed a clear opportunity by Ronaldo, Braga scored by Féher. After more chances wasted, Benfica managed to revert the score, in the best period of the season with Dani and Poborsky combinating repeatedly. However in overtime, Braga sent a ball to the post, scoring in the rebound, in a final 2-2.[23] In day 7, Benfica beat Belenenses, with Marchena scoring in a indirect free-kick after Tuck cleared a ball towards Marco Aurelio, which referee Isidoro Rodrigues controversially considered a back-pass violation. Belenenses also complained of back-pass violation from Benfica, and a annulled goal of Marcão, both dismissed.[24] In day 8, Benfica visited Paços de Ferreira, losing two points in a nil-nil daw after being with a men extra for more than 45 minutes, with Paços even threatening to score.[25] In 28 October, Vilarinho beat Vale e Azevedo in the Presidential race,[26] with the promiss of signing Jardel as his main triumph.[27] With his election, Mourinho offered to resign,[28] but Vilarinho guaranteed that he would finish his contract,[29] and then Toni would take over.[30] In the field, Benfica beat Campomaiorense by two-nil, with late goals from João Tomás, after Campomaiorense was down to 10 men. The visiting team complained of a foul from Rojas that should have been sentoff, and a clear penalty from Sabry that was overlooked.[31] In day 10, Benfica travelled to Madeira, facing Maritimo. After dominating possession and shooting 23 times, many inside the box, Benfica suffered a three-nil defeat, with Lagorio taking advantage of a high defence (set in a 3-4-3) to isolate himself three times against Enke, converting all. He became the first player since Manuel Fernandes in 1986 to score three goals to Benfica.[32] Benfica dropped to tenth place.[33] In the next day, Benfica suffered to beat Farense, with a controversial penalty awarded by António Costa near the end, equalizing the match. João Tomás scored a second four minutes later.[34] In day 12, Benfica visited Guimarães and won by 4-0, their first away win since May, with João Tomás scoring a hat-trick.[35] The next matchday, Benfica faced Sporting, the title holder, with João Pinto now in their line-up. A foul from André Cruz over Van Hooijdonk inside the box, with consequent penalty, broke a five year, 1800 day, 167 matches spell since Sporting conceded a goal from a penalty-kick. After Pedro Barbosa was sentoff for insults, João Tomás scored two more, on fast counter-attacks led by Poborsky. It was the largest win over Sporting since March 1988.[36] After the match, Mourinho gave a 24-hour ultimatum to President Vilarinho, demanding a contract extension for another season, citing better offers from other clubs. Vilarinho refused, claiming that his ultimatum was an unspokable act.[37] Mourinho and Mozer left the same day, claiming

Mr. Manuel Vilarinho entered the club with the stigma of a manager he didn't chose, which was valid; but me and Mozer though that the only way to end speculation and constant threat of sacking in the event of a bad result, was by telling the Board that we would only continue if they renewed our contracts for a further season; so we could do our job in peace. I have nothing against Mr. Vilarinho, but he thought it was better not to accept our request. We understood that decision showed a lack of trust in our work and that he should offer our resignation, so that the Board could choose the manager it sought best to fulfill the interests of Benfica.

— Mourinho resignation conference.[38]

Toni was appointed manager the day after, in a contract till 2003, promising good football and victories.[39][40][41] This decision was supported by the fans, which applauded Toni in his first practise.[42] He took over the team in sixth place, just three points behind second. In his first game back, Benfica lost in Alverca, with the team scoring first by João Tomás, conceding almost immediatily after, with one-one at the break. In the second half, Toni removed a player from the midfield to make way for Van Hooijdonk; a move that opened space for Alverca to score, in a final 2-1.[43] In the last match of the year, Benfica lost more points, drawing nil-nil with Gil Vicente, which was last in the league and had lost the last seven away matches. Gil Vicente made a tactically astute match, always counteracting the changes made by Toni. After the final whistle, Toni heard his first booing of the season.[44] In the transfer windows, Benfica didn't added Jardel as promised by Vilarinho, instead spending that amount on Roger.[45][46] In the first match day of January, Benfica won it's second away game, defeating Salgueiros. After Basilio scored from a corner, taking advantage of the passive defending from Benfica. Not 10 minutes later, Marchena went up and headed in a goal himself, equalizing. With Salgueiros reduced to 10, Van Hooijdonk headed in an assist by Marchena, in another corner. Benfica climbed to fifth.[47] In the last match of the first round, Toni continued to present his classical 4-4-2, defeating Desportivo Aves with a clear 5-1, with Van Hooijdonk scoring a hat-trick and assisting another, in the eve of facing Porto.[48] With nearly seventy thousand fans behind them, Benfica faced Porto in the second of three games. Toni removed João Tomás for Ednilson to play in a more cohesive 4-5-1. Benfica scored first after Maric fouled Sabry inside the box, Van Hooijdonk converted the penalty; Porto equalized shortly before half-time, with Deco assisting Capucho in a free-kick; In the final minutes, in a free-kick from Roger, Van Hooijdonk intentionally deflected his shot, scoring the final 2-1, with the team climbing to fourth.[49] In the last match of January, Benfica travelled to Aveiro, defeating the local Beira-Mar in another good performance from Van Hooijdonk. Benfica scored before half-time when the Dutchman converted a freekick. In the second half, Fernando Aguiar fouled João Tomás in the box, with Van Hooijdonk scoring his 14 league goal. With a final 3-1, Benfica was only two points behind Sporting and five behind Boavista.[50] In day 20, Benfica faced Manuel José's Leiria, scoring first after a freekick from Van Hooijdonk, that Costinha didn't grabbed, rebouding to João Tomás. Èder Gáucho then scored his second goal against Benfica, converting a freekick, with Benfica responding by another goal from a freekick, now by Roger. In the second half, Roger was fouled inside the box and Van Hooijdonk increased his goal tally to 15. Leiria still reduced after a shot from Nuno Valente, but Benfica secured the advantage till the end, climbing to second place.[51][52] Benfica won it's six league match in a row, beating Estrela da Amadora, in a good performance. Benfica conceded first, but Van Hooijdonk scored another freekick, equalizing. After Jorge Coroado, inexplicably annulled a clean goal in the 52nd minute, the Dutchman crossed perfectly to João Tomás score the winning goal.[53] Benfica closed the distance to first place to just two points after Boavista lost in Braga. In day 22, Benfica faced Boavista with the opportunity to become leader. A highly tactical game; both Jaime Pacheco and Toni tried to control the midfield, with Benfica creating only a handful of opportunities, notably a headed strike from Van Hooijdonk at 78th minute that hit the post. Benfica dropped to third after the draw.[54]

In a difficult visit to Braga, Benfica was surprised by a goal at the 2nd minute; after the team lost the ball, Riva crossed to Luis Filipe open the score. 7 minutes later, on a corner, Meira climbed and assisted João Tomás to the draw. Braga scored again minutes later, with Zé Roberto beating a freekick from 30 yards that deflected on Ednilson betraying Enke. In the second half, Benfica pressed hard but it was Braga that increased it's advantage, with another goal from Luis Filipe. Benfica dropped to fourth.[55] In day 24, Benfica visited Belenenses at Restelo, losing one-nil in a poor performance, as the team started to lose hope on the title race.[56] In the next matchday, Benfica faced Paços de Ferreira at home, with José Mota's team making a excellent performance, scoring twice in 10 minutes. Benfica only countered with Roger and Carlitos, with the latter reducing near the end of the first half. However in second half, first Enke allowed an weak strike from Rafael to enter, and then Ednilson was sentoff in a childish foul. Benfica dropped to fifth, fell of the title race and as in danger of missing UEFA competitions.[57] Ending a terrible month with 3 losses, Benfica faced Campomaiorense, dropping more points. For his lineup, Toni tried to create a more cohesive team around Roger, because he caused serious defensive problems due to his complete apathy when defending. This didn't work as planned with Van Hooijdonk saving a fourth straight loss near the end. In 15 points disputed since their last win, Benfica earned 2, as the season was starting to pan out as a historic bad one.[58] Benfica returned to success, beating Máritimo with a clear three-nil with Toni playing a extremely young team, with Ricardo Esteves, Diogo Luis, Ednilson, Rui Baião and Miguel, and without Enke, Roger and Van Hooijdonk.[59] In the visit to Faro, Benfica tied with Farense in a disputed game. Toni sidelined Van Hooijdonk, Roger and Enke again and started a lineup mostly based around youngsters. Hassan opened the scored after he outmuscled Fernando Meira inside the box; Benfica equalized after Miguel shot a loose ball inside the box and minutes later, João Tomás took advantage of a slip from an opponent to isolate himself and score. In the second half, Farense scored after Carlos Costa was left alone in a corner kick.[60] In late April, with Roger and Van Hooijdonk returning to the lineup, Benfica beat Guimarães at home, with a sole goal from Sabry after a cross from Van Hooijdonk.[61] In day 30, Benfica visited Alvalade, with Sporting responding to their historic 3-0 loss in December with another three-nil, their best result against Benfica since their 7-1 win in December 1986. Benfica was now 6 points away of a UEFA position.[62] In the return to Estádio da Luz, against Alverca. Toni removed Chano, Roger, Ednilson, Miguel and Sabry from the starting eleven. Benfica presented a poor performance , being completely outplayed by am accessible opponent; conceding their first in a owngoal from Dudic after Maniche tried to clear a cross, it rebounded on him; the second was a cross that Ronaldo didn't clear, much like in Sweden. In the end, the fans, insulted the team, as Benfica had the fifth place in risk.[63] Things got even worse, as Benfica lost in Barcelos to Gil Vicente and dropped to six place. In a record breaking season in terms of indiscipline, Miguel was sentoff, as the team proved hopeless to revert their third straight defeat, and equalizing their record-low 10 losses from 1996–97.[64] In their last home match, in a nearly empty Estádio da Luz, Benfica prevented a record fourth straight loss by drawing one-all with Salgueiros.[65]

All of us, didn't do everything he could, to prevent an historic club to slip into a position it isn't accustomed.

— Toni in post-match conference.[66]

Closing a disastrous season, Benfica faced Desportivo de Aves, and at 23rd minute they were losing three-nil; but responded with two goals before half-time, and another after the break. The local team still added a fourth, but André scored his first goal in Portugal, preventing a record eleventh loss. Nonetheless, after Leiria had won in Braga, Benfica ended in six place, their worst position ever.[67] Internal conflicts, like those between Roger and Van Hooijdonk,[68] the 11 sentoffs throughout the season and a squad with low quality, especially in defence, were pointed as causes of the downfall of the team, losing 28 out of 39 points since February.[69]

Portuguese Cup

In the Cup, Benfica were paired with Campomaiorense on round four. After the four-nil win in Guimarães, the team confidence was high, defeating the local team with an individual play from Sabry, after dribbling past several players and scoring.[70] In the fifth round, Benfica travelled to Algarve to face Louletano, winning for the first time in Toni reign, with Van Hooijdonk heading in two and assisting another to João Tomás.[71] In the sixth round, Benfica were to face Porto,[72] In the first match, Benfica and Porto tied one-all, in a rainy night, with Maniche opening the score after half-time, with Porto equalizing on a freekick near the end. Referee José Prates performance was criticized for multiple errors, including dismissing a handball from goalkeeper Pedro Espinha outside the box, a penalty from Ricardo Silva over Van Hooijdonk, but also ignoring harsh fouls from Ronaldo, Escalona and Geraldo.[73] In the replay, Toni changed a number of players, like Roger, Van Hooijdonk, opting of less used players and the team was completely outplayed, losing four-nil, in a flattering result, considering the difference between both lineups.[74]

Europe

In European football, Benfica entered the first round of the UEFA Cup, facing Sweedish champion Halmstads. In the first leg, Benfica was surprised with a 2-1 defeat. The Swedes scored first in a freekick that Van Hooijdonk failed to clear; he redeem himself shortly after, by scoring a freekick 38 yards out in a mistake of the local team goalkeeper. In the second half, Ronaldo cleared a ball directly to a opponent, with him scoring; Enke with two defences avoid a embarrassment.[75] In the second leg, with Mourinho already in charge, Benfica scored first by Van Hooijdonk, taking advantage of a cross from Carlitos, but the Swedish team responded with Selakovic making a killer pass to Gustafsson, that easily beat Enke. After numerous attempts, it was the Scandinavian team that increased it's score after a perfectly measured shot from Selakovic; Benfica still prevented the loss, with a goal from Miguel, but couldn't avoid a elimination in the first round, repeating the performance of 1997-98.[76]
