1DegreeBio is a website for life scientists to share reviews on products and service providers. The site inyends to provide a simple way to find products and services and reduce guesswork. Started in July 2010 [1] with their antibody portal, it has rapidly grown to a community of over 100,000 scientists worldwide and includes a growing list of biological reagents, as well as custom research service providers. The aim is to create a hub for product information, publications, validations, and reviews from scientists worldwide.[2]

Specialized Portals

The Epigenetics sub-portal was released in June 2012 in partnership with the Structural Genomics Consortium,[3] a niche community focused on Epigenetics related research. In July 2012, their second portal focused on Stem Cells was launched.[4]

Founders

Founded in 2009 by Alexandra Hodgson, Olga Volkova and Ron Yeung.[5][6]

Hodgson is daughter of deceased hotel magnate and former Toronto Argonauts owner William R. Hodgson.[7]

Funding

Macmillan Digital Science Ltd, Philip Armstrong, and its founding team.[8] Also grants from Ontario Centres of Excellence, Federal Economic Development Agency of Canada, and MaRS Discovery District.[9]

Advisory Boards

On the Scientific Advisory Board resides Dr. Lori Frappier (University of Toronto), Dr. Aled Edwards (University of Toronto/Structural Genomics Consortium), Dr. Brian Marsden (University of Oxford) and Dr. Sachdev Sidhu (Ontario Institute of Cancer Research/University of Toronto). The Board of Directors includes Philip Armstrong (CEO of Jovian Capital), Steven Scott (Head of Digital Tools, Macmillan Digital Science Ltd) and Dr. Aled Edwards (University of Toronto).
