The 1999 TranSouth Financial 400 was a NASCAR Winston Cup Series race held at Darlington Raceway, Darlington, South Carolina on March 21, 1999. Jeff Burton won the race.[2]

Summary

Contested over 164 out of a scheduled 293 laps, it was the fifth race of the 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup Series. The race was won by Jeff Burton for the Roush Racing team. Jeremy Mayfield finished second, and Jeff Gordon, who started from pole position, clinched third. Seventy-one thousand fans were on hand to attend this race that lasted one hour, fifty minutes and forty-nine seconds. A total distance of 19 laps were raced under low speeds due to two accident-related and one rain-related caution. Derrike Cope, Dave Marcis and Rich Bickle were not fast enough during qualifying to be in the race grid.[3] Jeff Burton's victory would help him bolt ahead of Mike Skinner in the NASCAR Cup Series championship standings.[4]

While adult-oriented sponsors like Winston cigarettes and Coors Light beer products were used, family-oriented sponsors like McDonald's, Cartoon Network and Kellogg's made up a considerable part of the racing grid. The majority of the grid drove Ford and Chevrolet vehicles; turning the event into a virtual showcase for General Motors's vast array of racing technology.[3]

Ken Schrader became the last-place finisher of the race; he was 89 laps behind the lead drivers and had no possibility of accomplishing even a top-ten finish. Schrader walked away with $30,416 as his take-home pay ($43,059.97 when adjusted for inflation) while the race winner came away with a then-incredible $161,900 in winnings ($229,202.02 when adjusted for inflation).[5]
