1999 Bangabandhu Cup was the second season of the Bangabandhu Cup, after the first edition was held in 1996-7. The second edition ran from 27 August 1999 to 7 September 1999. The first game was a Group D encounter between Japan League XI and Indonesian Football Club Semen Padang. Japan League XI went on to win the cup after defeating Ghana Olympic team 3-2 in the finals.[1]

Bangabandhu Cup was discontinued since the 1999 edition due to ever-changing political scenario of the country coinciding with the receding popularity of the football in Bangladesh.[2] Bangabandhu Gold Cup was relaunched again in 2015. The third edition is set to start from January 29, 2015.[3]

Format

In group stage twelve teams divided into four groups of three teams. Each group was a round robin of three games, where each team played one match against each of the other teams in the same group. Teams were awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and none for a defeat. The teams finishing first in each group qualified for the Semi-finals. The winners of the Semi-final games were to play in the finals.
