The 1999–2000 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 96th season in existence and the club's 66th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Liga and the Taça de Portugal. Benfica qualified for the UEFA Cup by finishing 3rd in the previous Primeira Liga.[1]

After the resignation of Graeme Souness in the previous season. Benfica nominated recent European champion manager Jupp Heynckes.[2][3]

In the Primeira Liga, Benfica finished in third, securing a spot for next season UEFA Cup. A notable game in the season was the victory against Sporting CP in day 33, with a late goal from Sabry, preventing Sporting from being champions at home against Benfica.[4][5]

In the Taça de Portugal, Benfica reached the sixth round, before being defeated at home by Sporting, for the third time in the club's history.[6]

In the UEFA Cup, Benfica reached the third round, where they suffered their biggest European defeat ever, with accusations of unprofessionalism from the players. Captain João Pinto along with the entire squad, were obligated by president Vale e Azevedo to apologize to associates on a public announcement.[7]

Season summary

Pre-season

After a disappointing second year, Graeme Souness was sacked in mid-April, with President Vale e Azevedo banning him from enter the club premises.[8] He was succeeded by Jupp Heynckes, which had come from a sabbatical year, following his European success in Real Madrid.[9] Heynckes wanted reinforcements for the left-back, centre-back, left midfielder and striker positions.[10] Players like Hanuch,[11] Giovanni [12] Claudio Husaín,[13] were scouted, but Benfica ultimately opted for Okunowo, Sérgio Nunes, Sabry and Tote. The last as a replacement for Rushfeldt which signed, practised with the squad and left, with Rosenborg ordering his return.[14] President Vale e Azevedo later claimed that Tote was the intended choice and Rushfeldt left because he couldn't handle the pressure.[15] This season also marked the end of Preud'Homme career. Bossio was his intended successor but a poor performance in a preseason game against Bayern Munich cast doubts over his quality,[16] with Enke immediately stepping in and becoming starter.[17] The team was set around Enke, Rojas or Andrade at the right, Paulo Madeira and Ronaldo in the center, and Bruno Basto at the left. In 4-2-3-1 line-up, Calado and Kandaurov played behind Poborsky, João Pinto and Maniche, and the trio supporting Nuno Gomes.

League

Benfica started with a draw against Rio Ave,[18] rebounding with wins against Salgueiros,[19] Santa Clara,[20] and Vitória de Setúbal, reaching the top of the table.[21] They continued on their winning trend, beating Farense,[22] Estrela da Amadora,[23] and Gil Vicente.[24] In their first difficult match, Benfica tied with Boavista, keeping the first place,[25] suffering their first league loss of the season against Alverca in the next matchday.[26] Benfica won their next match, beating Braga,[27] but lost in the trip to Estádio das Antas.[28] In the week after a historic defeat in Vigo, the Reds defeated Campomaiorense,[29] but lost points again in an away fixture, after a draw with Beleneneses, falling to second.[30] In day 14, Benfica won again, beating União de Leiria,[31] but lost points again outside Estádio da Luz, losing in Guimarães and dropping to third.[32][33] In the Derby de Lisboa, Benfica draw with Sporting,[34] which was followed by another draw, now against Marítimo.[35] The Eagles then started a month with only victories in the league, beating Rio Ave,[36] Salgueiros,[37] Santa Clara,[38] Vitória de Setúbal,[39] and Farense,[40] closing the distance to the top of the table to just one point. However, they suffered a three-nil defeat against Estrela da Amadora in late February, ending their winnin run.[41] Benfica rebounded with a win against Gil Vicente,[42] but lost points again, when it conceded an overtime goal in an away draw against Boavista.[43] What followed, was a rollercoast of results with a win against Alverca,[44] a loss against Braga,[45] wins against Porto,[46] and Campomaiorense,[47] losses against Belenenses,[48] and União de Leiria,[49] before finishing the season with three wins. Against Guimarães,[50] Sporting,[51] which prevented them from winning the title,[52] and finally, Maritimo.[53]

Taça de Portugal

In the Taça de Portugal, Benfica defeated Torres Novas in the fourth round, with a late goal from Tote.[54] This was followed by a seven-nil trashing of Amora in the fifth round,[55] before being stopped in the sixth round, with a home loss against Sporting.[56]

Europe

After finishing third in the league, Benfica entered the UEFA Cup in their first round, facing the Dinamo Bucarest. In the first leg, Enke made a mistake in a free-kick allowing the ball to pass between his hand, as the Romanianis walked away with a 1-0 win.[57] In the secon leg, Benfica won two-nil with goals from Maniche and Chano, passing to the next round,[58] where it met PAOK from Greece, beating them in the first leg, with Ronaldo assisting the first and scoring the second.[59] In the second leg, the Greeks surprised Benfica, winning 2-1, equalizing the aggregate score, with the Reds only passing on penalties.[60] In the third round, Benfica faced Spaniards Celta de Vigo,[61] In the first leg, an awful performance led to the biggest defeat ever, in a seven-nil loss.[62][63] This result was received with anger from the fans, insulting and booing the players, with João Pinto, Paulo Madeira, Calado and Nuno Gomes suffering the most.[64] President Vale e Azevedo forced the squad to apologize to the fans,[65] in a special announcement transcribed below.

Later Nuno Gomes defended the professionalism of the players,[67] but confessed months later that the defeat in Vigo compromised the team spirit for the remainder of the season.[68] In the second leg, with Celta using almost entirely a reserve lineup, Benfica only managed a one-one draw, leaving the competition with a 8-1 defficit.[69]
