The 1998–99 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 95th season in existence and the club's 65th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Divisão and the Taça de Portugal. Benfica qualified for the UEFA Champions League by finishing 2nd in the previous Primeira Divisão.^[1]

Season summary

Having arrived in mid-season in 1997-98, leading them to a second place finish. Graeme Souness had his powers increased, with freedom to assemble a squad as he saw better. Nelo Vingada, his assistant was let go and replaced by Phil Boersma, a personal friend of Souness.^[2] Benfica signed Michael Thomas and Mark Pembridge in July 1998, Dean Saunders in January 1999, plus Gary Charles and Steve Harkness in March, but lost Brian Deane and Scott Minto.^[3]

Souness second season was much more controversial. He refused to learn the language, constantly flew back to the UK, and played negative, English-style long-ball football. His assistant, was far less useful than Vingada, displaying total ignorance regarding other team talented players.^[4][5]

Benfica league performance was irregular, with negative patches in October and April.^[6] However, ten wins in 12 matchdays midseason, close the distance to Boavista, which was top of the table and was the team next opponent. Souness opted to play Harkness and Charles with only three practises, with disastrous results, losing three-nil with the team derailing after that, with only three wins in 9 matchdays.^[7] In early May, Souness was sacked, being forcibly locked out of Estádio da Luz by President Vale e Azevedo, with former glory Shéu Han replacing him for the final four matches..^[7][8][9]

In the Taça de Portugal, Benfica reached the fifth round, losing to Vitória de Setúbal. In the UEFA Champions League, Benfica reached the group stage defeating Israeli team Beitar Jerusalem, thrashing them 6–0 in the first leg, but being surprised in Israel with a 4–2 defeat. In the Group F of the Champions League, Benfica finished second, behind Kaiserslautern. They lost 5 points with Finnish team HJK Helsinki which prevented them from progressing further.^[7]
