The 1997–98 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 94th season in existence and the club's 64th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Divisão and the Taça de Portugal. Benfica qualified for the UEFA Cup by finishing 3rd in the previous Primeira Divisão.[1]

Season summary

Following troubled year with only a Cup final to show, Manuel José continued as manager from the previous season. In the off-season, Benfica added Nuno Gomes, Carlos Gamarra, and the joint-top scorer of the Brazilian league, Paulo Nunes. The first became a historic club player with nearly 400 appearances,[2] the Paraguayan and the Brazilian only spent six months in Lisbon, the first was immediately sold as the club needed cash,[3] and the latter didn't settled, so it was sold to Palmeiras.[4] In the winter transfer season, Benfica added Poborský, Brian Deane and Luís Carlos, which all helped the team improve his performance.[5]

In the league, Benfica started with 2 losses in the first four matches, with the last causing the dismissal of Manuel José.[6] João Pinto allegedly assaulted a fireman after the game, being acquitted for lack of evidences.[7] Mário Wilson led the team as interim manager until November.[8] Graeme Souness took over, comfortably reaching the second place, in the process beating Sporting and Porto. The match against Sporting marked the return of João Pinto after two months absence after a brutal attack from Porto player Paulinho Santos.[9] More than 15 years later, it was the last time Benfica beat their two biggest rivals with a 3 goal difference in the same league season.[5]

In the Taça de Portugal, Benfica reached the semi-finals, before being stopped by Braga. It was the fourth time, after 1966, 1979 and 1982, that they were eliminated by Braga.[5] In the UEFA Cup, Benfica lost in the first round against Bastia. The defeat in the first leg, significantly inscreased the pressure against Manuel José, four days before his dismissal, as Bastia was deemed an accessible opponent.[5][10] In November 1997, Manuel Damásio was replaced by João Vale e Azevedo after he defeated another contestant, Luís Tadeu.[11]
