- 26 February – Barings Bank collapses due to the activities of one trader, Nick Leeson, who lost $1.4 billion by speculating on the Singapore International Monetary Exchange, primarily using futures contracts.

- 11 March - CETV Family Channel was officially inaugurated by Toni Braxton was accompanied by the Prime Minister of Malaysia's Mahathir Mohamad, King of Malaysia's Jaafar of Negeri Sembilan & Sultan of Brunei Darussalam's Hassanal Bolkiah at 19:00 HKT with a ”You're Makin' Me High” performance.
