The 1995–96 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 92nd season in existence and the club's 62nd consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Divisão and the Taça de Portugal. Benfica qualified for the UEFA Cup by coming third in previous League.[1]

Season summary

In his second season, Artur Jorge, facing serious health problems with a head tumour, moved a number of players that were part of the team for five seasons, like Neno, Vítor Paneira, Isaías and César Brito, finding replacements mostly inside the Portuguese league, while Valdo and Ricardo Gomes, returned from France. This changes are still controversial, with Isaias claiming that he intended to destroy Benfica.[2][3]

This new signings failed to make immediate impact, with two draws in the first three matchdays led to sacking of Artur Jorge in early September. Mário Wilson replaced him.[4]

In the Primeira Divisão, Benfica finished in the second place. A bad start with Artur Jorge meant the title was never in the equation, but still, the club had some important wins throughout the season, like a home win against Porto and the reversal of a two nill in Guimarães with an inspired João Pinto, who ended the season with 18 league goals.[5]

In the Taça de Portugal, Benfica had far more success, led by Marcelo who finished as the Portuguese Cup top scorer, the club progressed to the final. There, with a double from João Pinto, Benfica defeated Sporting CP (3–1) and won their 23rd Portuguese Cup . In the end of the game, a Sporting supporter was fatally hit by a flare thrown by a Benfica supporter.[5][6]

In Europe, after facing Lierse SK in the first round, passing Roda JC in the second round, with Hassan scoring a double in the final minutes. Benfica faced Bayern Munich in the third round where Klinsmann, who Artur Jorge rejected months earlier, scored six goals, as Bayern walked past Benfica. The Portuguese press named these matches as 'Cataklinsmann', mixing Klinsmann with a cataclysm like event.[7]
