The 1993–94 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 90th season in existence and the club's 60th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Divisão and the Taça de Portugal. Benfica qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup by winning previous Portuguese Cup.[1]

Season summary

In the summer transfer window of 1993, a financial unstable Benfica lost 2 players to crosstown rivals, Sporting.[2] Nicknamed the Hot Summer of 1993, in reference to the troubled times of the PREC, the post revolution in 1975,[3] in early June, António Pacheco and Paulo Sousa unilaterally terminate their contracts with Benfica for unpaid salaries, and signed for Sporting. Although only Sousa was a vital part of the team, both were at Benfica for over 5 years and their transfer was considered a betrayal. João Vieira Pinto also terminated his contract but president Jorge de Brito was able to re-sign him with an improved salary.

In the Primeira Divisão, Benfica started with 3 draws but progressed to the top of the league in October, remaining there until the end, conquering their 30th title for the club in a sold out Estádio 1º de Maio in Braga on 25 May 1994. Early in the month, in Alvalade, with Sporting only a point behind in the league and with the favoritism on their side, Benfica won 3–6 with a hat-trick from João Pinto, in one of the club's historic matches.[4][5]

The Taça de Portugal ended in the sixth round, with 2 goals from future Benfica players. In the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, the club won in the home match and lost in the away, tying the series with the decisive game being played in the next season, on 17 August 1994.

In Europe, Benfica progressed to the European Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals, which included a historic 4–4 draw in Germany against Bayer Leverkusen with two late goals from Kulkov.[6] Afterwards, Benfica faced Parma, winning at home with a goal from Rui Costa, but in the away match in Parma, Mozer was sent off in 32nd minute, and with 15 minutes left, Sensini scored the winning goal for the Italians, ending the European campaign.[7]
