The 1992–93 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 89th season in existence and the club's 59th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Divisão and the Taça de Portugal. Benfica qualified for the UEFA Cup by finishing second in the previous season.[1]

Season summary

In the summer transfer window of 1992, Sven-Göran Eriksson moves to Sampdoria,[2] and Benfica hires former Porto manager, Tomislav Ivić. His decisions caused immediate controversy, he chose Shéu as assistant manager, instead of Toni, who partnered with Eriksson in his term; and asked that the dimensions of Estádio da Luz field be shortened in width, so Benfica can adjust to playing in away matches.[3][4] In the winter transfer season, in January 1993, Benfica added Paulo Futre for €3.75 million, a high profile signing that caused discussion with crosstown rivals Sporting.[5][6][7]

In the Primeira Divisão, Benfica started with 2 wins, but 3 points lost against accessible teams started to cause distrust in Ivić. A loss in Alvalade, the first since 1986, and another draw against an accessible team meant that Ivić was sacked after just 12 matches. He was replaced by Toni, and while performances improved, a loss and draw in May, delivered the title to Porto.[8][9][10]

The Taça de Portugal however, saved the season, the conquest of the twenty-fifth Cup were marked by two high pressure matches. In 17 January 1993 Benfica managed to draw in Estádio das Antas, whiile trailing by 1–0 with ten players, Mostovoi tied the game at the 88th minute. In the semi-final against Vitória de Guimarães, Benfica trailed for over 75 minutes, but goals from Isaías and Rui Àguas decided the contend. In the final, Benfica put five past Boavista with Paulo Futre in evidence.[11] In the Supercup, Benfica lost the Replay of the 1991 edition in a dramatic manner, it scored the fist three but misses the last three, with Vítor Baía, defending two.

In Europe, Benfica progressed to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals, were they were stopped by eventual winners Juventus, which had Roberto Baggio and Vialli in their team.[12][13]
