F.C. Internazionale Milano improved on their disappointing 1985-86 form, finishing 3rd in the domestic league. It was the first season under new coach Giovanni Trapattoni, coming from multiple titles with Juventus. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge departed the squad after the season's end, being replaced by Aldo Serena.
