Season
Following the successful previous season, in 1963–64 Inter made his debut in European Cup, winning the trophy at the first attempt. Herrera's team managed to defeat, in order: Everton (0–0 and 1–0), Monaco (1–0 and 3–1), Partizan (2–0 and 2–1), Borussia Dortmund (2–2 and 2–0) and in the final Real Madrid (3–1, with a Sandro Mazzola's double).
In domestic league, the club failed to defend his title. Inter and Bologna came both at first place, with 54 points each. For the first, and only, time in Serie A the champion team was declared by a tie-breaker: on neutral venue, in Rome, Bologna won 2–0 resulting champion, and Inter, respectively, second.
