- A 13 year old George Bizos, with his father, help 7 New Zealand soldiers escape Nazi occupied Greece to Crete.

- 31 January – Eugène Ney Terre'Blanche, Afrikaner right-wing founder of the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging, is born in Ventersdorp.
- Richard Turner, activist and academic, is born in Cape Town.
Deaths
- 20 April – Marmaduke Pattle, the highest scoring fighter pilot of the Royal Air Force and Commonwealth Air Forces, is shot down and killed over Greece.
- 11 June – Andries Abraham Stockenström le Fleur, Griqua leader and visionary, dies in Krantzhoek in the Plettenberg Bay area.
- 17 September - Newell Orton, fighter pilot. is killed in action.
